Sometimes farebeating is OK, says (NYC) City Councilman Robert Jackson

There's a time and a place for everything—even farebeating, in one City Councilman’s opinion.

Councilman Robert Jackson said he told his wife to duck under the turnstiles at the 181st Street station on the A line, which had a broken MetroCard machine, rather than walk to a staffed entrance at 184th Street.

“I told her to go under,” Jackson said. “I would have gone under. Whoever goes to buy a MetroCard should be entitled to a free ride if the machines aren’t working, if there’s no token booth clerk there,” he added. …

Nothing like a politician that stands for the rule of law, right? Jackson (D) represents Harlem, Inwood and Washington Heights on the NY City Council.

Er “FACEbeating”, that is. Guess I should emphasize the part I misread.

I now wonder if his viewpoints are guided by Shari’a.

Criminality is being mainstreamed.

A man should only attempt to jump over subway turnstiles if he’s rushing to Thailand.

(An old joke — the punchline invokes the capital of Thailand.)

I now wonder if his viewpoints are guided by Shari’a.

If he's Muslim, and they're not, then he is apostate and automatically sentenced to death.

There's no waffling in Islam - it's like being pregnant, you either are, or you're not.

The greatest treachery George Bush ever perpitrated was fronting the "moderate Muslim" meme. It has been an absolute catastrophe not only for America, but for the entire world. It is the single most successful Taqiyya ever created by Muslims, and our own president validated and institutionalized it.

O hooded St. Skittles,
Ye without limit,
Pray for this misguided representative of your people,
Fill the empty void of his conscience with wisdom,
As the watermelon juice cocktail fills the metal cylinder,
And in your mercy save him from his infinite buffoonery yo.
Peace out.

When my friends and I were teens, we’d do that “what’s the capital of Thailand” joke and mercilessly punch or knee the unsuspecting person down there.

So let me get this straight. You walk into a subway station that is unstaffed - nobody there to pay a fare to. The machines that take the fares are broken. And you are expected to turn around and go find another subway station that will take your money?

Sorry, but I can't sign on to this. I'm climbing under those turnstiles and catching my train. If they want to send me a bill later, fine, I'll pay it. But I need to get to work or go wherever I'm going now, not later.

This is similar to what happens in Boston all the time with regard to parking meters. If I find a metered space in Boston and the meter is busted (won't take my money), I'm still parking there. I'm not going to get into my car and drive around the block another 20 times looking for a working meter. My time is too valuable for that.

Wow. Back when I had a nearly hour commute and any number of variables could make me late for work, I did something I call “contingency planning” instead of breaking the law. Maybe I should have thrown caution to the wind and just driven 70-80 or so on the interstate rather than leave a few minutes early just in case I had trouble finding a parking space.

It’s not an unstaffed station; just an unstaffed entrance, at 181st Street. There was a staffed entrance three blocks north, at 184th Street. If there’s anything the NYC subway would not have, it would be unstaffed stations, which is remarkable for such a large system and equally remarkable for having used the Metrocard for as long as it has. I don’t have the same kind of experience with the MBTA to compare, honestly.

I’m with SamAdams76 on this. If a highway toll booth is closed, I’m not going to sit there for who knows how long to wait for someone to show up and take my money. And I’m not going to try to find an alternate route, if there is one.
No, I’m going to drive right on through and not lose a wink of sleep over it.

Reminds me of the old Candid Camera show that had installed a “traffic signal” on a sidewalk to see how pedestrians would react when the light turned red. Interestingly, many would actually stop in the middle of a sidewalk and wait for the light to turn green, then proceed on their way. Amazing.
