22) “Nuts.” — The response of General Anthony MacAuliffe, when asked to surrender during the Battle of the Bulge, 1944

That’s the censored movie version.

He actually wrote “EFF You”. But he didn’t write “EFF”.

I don’t think that is true. I have seen an alleged copy of the typed response. It said NUTS. It was in a military museum.

I was wondering if I am the only one on FR who is aware of that. Thank you.

That can’t be correct. The German didn’t understand the message and asked what it (”Nuts”) meant. The reply that what sent was “Go to Hell!” They certainly would have understood the meaning of F-U, and “Go to Hell!” is pretty tame for a follow-up to F-U.

Because he didn't know his enemy. Had he told the German emisarry Götz von Berlichingen! the enemy officer would have understood the reference immediately, [Er kann mich am Arsche lecken!], even if he wasn't one of the 17th SS Division officers the 101 Airborne had faced following the Niormandy invasion. As would have the German poet Johann Goethe and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart....
