I don’t think that is true. I have seen an alleged copy of the typed response. It said NUTS. It was in a military museum.

That can’t be correct. The German didn’t understand the message and asked what it (”Nuts”) meant. The reply that what sent was “Go to Hell!” They certainly would have understood the meaning of F-U, and “Go to Hell!” is pretty tame for a follow-up to F-U.

Had he told the German emisarry Götz von Berlichingen! the enemy officer would have understood the reference immediately, [Er kann mich am Arsche lecken!], even if he wasn't one of the 17th SS Division officers the 101 Airborne had faced following the Niormandy invasion. As would have the German poet Johann Goethe and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart....
