ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) -- St. Louis County Police say a store clerk at a mattress store on South Lindbergh was struck in the head with a gun during a hold-up attempt.

Police said the incident happened Monday evening just before 9:00 at the Mattress Firm SuperCenter at Lindbergh and Interstate 55.

Police say the gunman was attempting to rob the store and at some point tried to shoot the clerk, but the gun misfired. The gunman then struck the clerk in the head with the gun and took off on foot. He was last seen in the area around the Holiday Inn which is right behind the mattress store.

Several officers responded to search for the suspect, but there were no reports of an arrest. Police did provide a description. They say the suspect is a dark-skinned black male, about 6' tall with a thin build. He appeared to be in his mid-30's. He was wearing a dark sweatshirt, dark jeans and a black ski mask.

Does anyone pay cash for mattresses? I can’t imagine they have much of a cash drawer.

Too bad the store clerk wasn't armed. Suspects are a lot easier to find when they're leaking blood. Easiest when they're DRT.

I remember quite a few years ago, a criminal tried to execute a Mobile, Alabama policeman. I don’t recall all the details but he was saved by the gun malfunctioning.

When examined, all six rounds in the cylinder had slight primer indentations but apparently not enough to make them fire. Probably the luckiest man alive that day.

Some thug in Houston robbed a day care center (with children present) at gunpoint last week.

“When examined, all six rounds in the cylinder had slight primer indentations but apparently not enough to make them fire.”

Not too long ago, an urban thug running from the police turned and fired at the pursuing officer. The thug only got off one round, because his semi-auto handgun jammed when the spent casing stovepiped instead of being fully ejected.

The pursuing officer then bagged him easily.

The thug was holding his gun sideways, gangsta style, meaning the spent brass had to eject vertically. And it didn’t.

Sometimes I think ghetto “fashion” (wrong grip, pants on the ground) is our greatest aid to eliminating these thugs. Right behind terminal stupidity, that is.

Especially here in Kalifornia where the legislature had the wisdom to outlaw "Saturday Night Specials". Now the only legally available handguns are manufactured by those with $10K or so to spend in jumping through Kalifornia's hoops.

How nice to know that the typical criminal will be using a highly reliable gun. It's not what I would choose, but then I'm not a brain dead liberal.
