A Linwood Township man is in critical condition after the St. Paul Bomb Squad removed an unexploded firework from his chest over the holiday weekend.
The 31-year-old apparently was shooting off illegal fireworks in the 6800 block of 225th Lane in Linwood Township about 9 p.m. Saturday, May 26, when a firework intended for the sky penetrated his chest, according to Cmdr. Paul Sommer, spokesman for the Anoka County sheriff's office.
He had placed two rounds in a mortar tube and was holding the tube when the first round shot up and exploded in the air as intended. The other came out the back, Sommer said.
"It was almost like it was fired out of a gun," Sommer said.

The hand-wringers are starting on their anti-fireworks boo-hoo stories early this year.

Never hold the tube in your hand.

Hold mah beer...
Hold mah beer...
I don’t care if a person wants to be an idiot.
But these particular fools tie up medical staff and rescue crews when they engage in this type of stupidity every year.
If they want to be a badass with fireworks then they should get some first aid training before they light up.
Hence, I bring back my old tagline.
Perhaps he was trying to recreate that Katy Perry video?
Bomb Squad cheats Darwin, film at 11
Imagine that. Put this guy on the Darwin Watch List.
Maybe he should have sat on the tube instead...
That would be a firework-ectomy, wouldn’t it?
I remember years ago Time magazine wrote of a soldier that had an unexploded hand grenade removed from his body. Their headline was “grenade-ectomy”. They had a picture. Doctors worked from behind a concrete column.
Regarding mortar-tube fireworks (the firework is in a tube, one charge shoots another charge into the air which explodes into something pretty and/or noisy).
Cut off the top end of the mortar tube so it’s shorter. Then the 2nd charge doesn’t go as high into the air and the audience really gets something for their money when it explodes.
Yeah, we should have yet another activity that the government regulates ...
Read that once regarding an unexploded RPG .
