Mitt Romney’s nomination marks milestone for Mormon faith
Washington Post ^ | May 30, 2012 | Sandhya Somashekhar and Jason Horowitz,

America quietly observed a major milestone in its history Tuesday when Mitt Romney became the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party.

-SNIP-

“If you look at it in a historical perspective, it’s absolutely incredible,” said Richard Lyman Bushman, a leading Mormon scholar and longtime acquaintance of Romney’s. “A century-and-a-half ago, Mormons were detested as a people as well as a religion. They were thought to be primitive and crude. And now to have someone overcome all the lingering prejudice, that’s a milestone.”

-SNIP-

If the silence serves a political purpose for Romney, it serves a pastoral one for the church. Mormonism is one of the world’s fastest-growing religions, with as many adherents in the United States as Judaism. Still, about one in three Americans say they have an unfavorable view of the Mormon church, according to a March Bloomberg News poll.

A century ago the notion of a Mormon occupying the presidency was inconceivable.

“This is in a way a natural development in the history of Mormonism,” said Jon Meacham, a journalist who has written extensively on politics and religion. “Joseph Smith and the founders of the church clearly saw America as the new Jerusalem, and therefore for an adherent of the faith to have such a central role in the life of a nation would have been something they dreamed of.”

WaPo does a victory lap for their success in the nomination of a weak candidate to run against Obama. Look for more media articles reminding voters of the candidate's "unusual" faith..while ignoring the Rev. Wright.

Look also for more pressure on FR from MittBots on those of us who refuse to swallow the kool-aid while they ignore the article claim that Still, about one in three Americans say they have an unfavorable view of the Mormon church, according to a March Bloomberg News poll.

HUH? Did I miss the convention? Are they counting delegates for Romney who are actually voting for Ron Paul?

I have to admit that I would have a more favorable view of Mormons if I had seen any at all while I was serving in Vietnam. There was a notable lack of the fringe sects among us..

I note that the Mittster had better things to do while I and many others were taking the brunt of the fight.and his many sons have never worn a uniform.

Must have a different definition of patriotism than the rest of us.

From the same article, it apparently still is for one in three voters. This is going to hit ORomney hard in November.

I think Donnie and Marie did more for the image of Mormans than did Willard.

Romney only needs 30 more delegates legally bound to him to clinch on the first round of voting, no matter what shenanigans the Paulistinians believe they can achieve. With Utah outstanding, that will happen.

Don’t you remember? Willard said that his sons serve their country by working on his campaigns.

Oh I dunno...

not by the Mormons...

When Joey Smith got himself crowned “king of the world” and then ran for POTUS in 1884 he thought he was going to be the first Mormon presient foir life and there was no doubt amongst his followers...

They thought he was entitled...

He sent them out to knock on doors all over the country and campaign for him...

but unfortunately, he got himself killed in a shootout in June of that year...

The first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party to get himself killed...

Willard is in a cult. The media WILL make movies, and tell of all the bizarre beliefs of their faith; but we knew that BEFORE the primary started. Romney bought the nomination square and fair, with the help of rove, coulter, drudge, fox, and many cheaters and compromisers. So all you sheep out here should just get in line and vote your conscience—no not your conscience, vote as you are told or you will be voting for obama. . After all he is better than obama. Obama is pro-abortion-—so is romney. Obama is anti-gun—so is romney. Obama is for socialized medicine-—so is romney. Obama is for gay marriage-—romney set up gay marriage in MA & NOW says gays should be able to adopt same as straight couples. (Imagine those poor kids in a few years) I know, romney can talk about money and obama can't. So it comes down to this; it's all about the money. To hell with what is right and what is wrong. We have to help one evil beat the other evil. After al.l our forefathers would be proud that we had enough courage to give in and give up and not fight both evils. If romney wins he will get 8 years and who knows how the winds will blow.

It's weird, because romney refused to attend one social conservative event and keeps saying social conservatives will vote for him. I don't think the clairvoyants in his church are very good. Romney read my mind (*%$#)

Magic underwear... becoming a god... going to planet kobol... living on another planet with spirit wives and children... smith being the only true way to the Father... what could they possibly find about mitt's religion that would be controversial? /S

Pressure, oh heck no.
Irrationality will be more like it.
There are those who easily surrender conservative principles to vote for not BHO.
I have held my nose and voted for my last liberal four years ago, I will not ever again.
It has been the capitulation of conservatives to accept liberals in the GOP that has brought us to this point: liberal R or liberal D.

My guess is that about 2/3 would rather have a Mormon that a Moslem and as for me I don’t care if you worship doorknobs if you’re a good citizen which most Mormons seem to be.

Shoot, that's nothing...the MittBots will now begin labeling him "President Romney" on FR.

I've served with several Mormons in the Navy, both officers and enlisted.

Ask Obama how many wives his Daddy had.

The Rev Wright interview shows positively that Obama was a life-long Muslim until he met Wright in the ‘90s who “taughet” O about Christianity and assured him he could become a member of the Black Liberaiton Church without offending his Muslim faith or Muslim friends and family.
