Four armed men stormed the Gold N Treasures jewelry store on San Ramon Valley Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon looking to rob the suburban mom-and-pop shop, but were foiled after one of them was fatally shot during the attempt -- possibly by an employee or the store owner.
San Ramon police confirmed that the suspect died Wednesday night.
Mortally wounded, the man ran into busy San Ramon Valley Boulevard seeking help as the evening commute was under way.
Paramedics at the scene ripped the wounded man's bloody clothing from his body and took him to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The clothing remained in the street for several hours before it was bagged as evidence.
The dead man's name was not released. San Ramon police Chief Scott Holder would not confirm if an employee or an owner shot the man, but he said the shooting occurred inside the store and no customers were inside during the attempted robbery.
The incident was reported about 4:35 p.m. in the shop in the 2500 block of San Ramon Valley Boulevard.
The other suspects got away, police said, possibly driving off in a white, four-door 1990s car. The vehicle's make, model and license plate number weren't available.
Kaitlyn Parvin, the 19-year-old daughter of store owner Everett Parvin, said her parents, who both work in the store, aren't likely to stand by and be victimized.
"They are strong people," she said. "They are not the kind of people who are going to be pushed around by somebody."
Everett Parvin was not available for comment.
Kaitlyn Parvin said she saw her father briefly after she was called to the scene Wednesday.
"I barely had time to say, 'Hi, I love you, you're good,' " she said.
Early reports were that a police officer shot the suspect, but Holder said no officers were involved in the shooting.
Boris Borrissov, the owner of Bulgary Jewelry in Danville, was outside Gold N Treasures after the shooting and said he knows Parvin and "wouldn't be surprised" if the man used a gun on a would-be robber. People in the area said some men tried to rob the store earlier this year, but spotted the gun and fled. Police have not confirmed that account.
Gold N Treasures carries jewelry, watches, gold and silver coins. It is in the same shopping center as a 7-Eleven store where police officer shot and killed a robber in July 2010.
Northbound San Ramon Valley Boulevard was closed around the Twin Canyon Shopping Center, between Norris Canyon and Crow Canyon roads, during the investigation.
Police are reviewing surveillance video.
Several similar incidents have been reported in past years. In Vallejo earlier this month, the owner of Carrillo's Jewelry Store at 529 Broadway St. shot and killed a 37-year-old Hercules man who attempted to rob the store, Vallejo police said. And in 2009, the owner of Alamo Jewelry Mart in Alamo and a would-be robber were both severely injured in a shootout.
Good shooting citizen
Society thanks you for removing one more miscreant.....
They picked the wrong shop to rob!
Once upon a time four ne’er do wells walked into a jewelry store to rob it. Somebody shot one of them dead and the other three ran for their lives. The End.
