CNBC video ^ | 30 May 2012 | brian shactman

...Detroit is known for few things, right? the auto industry. it's the first city to pave a road in america. it's known for motown and of course the birthplace of ice cream soda. who doesn't know that? now it wants to be known for something else, technology. brian shactman is there. all right. brian, first off, what is -- it is true. the first news radio -- i didn't know that. i wanted to throw that out there. and good hockey. i wanted to throw it out to you, what exactly technologywise is happening in the motor city. well, brian, actually i think two words you used are perfect. actually happening. it's not on some white board or city planning, they're doing something. this building right here was empty a year ago. now it has three venture capitalist firms inside with a slew of technology start-ups. the interesting thing is there's a lot of young people ...

A flicker of light in MoTown, hopefully? (sigh).

No. That flicker is the street lights being turned off.

Yeah, right. That highly educated, highly motivated, non-union workforce in Detroit will fit right in with hi-tech.

When I was in Detroit last January I didn’t see much in the way of “tech”.My God,80% of the *streetlights* didn’t work.Even Dar Es Salaam has functioning street lights.

Good luck uprooting VLSI logic designers and programmers from Los Gatos and Sunnyvale and telling them to relocate to one of the most miserable and dangerous places in the US.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel (D), a former Sheriff, has been making claims that Macomb County is on track to become “the defense capitol of the world”...

Macomb County is immediately north and east of Detroit with its southern boundary at 8 Mile Road.

Detroit is Detroit and that’s all it is any more.

Macomb County does have its history of being a huge part of the Arsenal of Democracy (US Army) but it is nowhere near to ever being the “defense capitol of the world”.

Methinks there is a basic problem with the culture of the remaining Detroit population.

Teaching them to read might be a good start.

After that, teaching them how to locate and defumigate (and do rude, awful things to) all liberals will be the next logical step.

Then - they might just have a chance.

Personally I don't see tech as being the salvation of Detroit or America. Obviously any jobs help but America needs to be a nation of diggers, drillers, builders and makers.

This is wishful thinking being reported as fact.

The states that are picking up hi-tech jobs are ones like Texas and Utah. Ones that have generally friendly business environments.

Someone in Detroit decided to start an advertising campaign to attract hi-tech business, and this is just ad spin. The same as Michigan tried to get the movie business jump-started in the state.

California is losing hi-tech business to other states, but I guran-damn-tee you that nobody is moving their IT business from California to Detroit.

bribing start ups to set up shop in an unfavorable environment almost never works. the successful ones leave as soon as they are able, the ones that fail add to the original problem, and the ones that get mugged by their fellow detroit citizens close their doors.

That company is in Livonia, real close to where I grew up on the west side of Detroit. It was a great place to live in the 1940s thru the mid 60s but I left for good in 1972 and have returned only briefly for funerals of relatives and friends. What the democrats have done to that great city is heartbreaking.

Soon, democrats will do that to the rest of the U.S.A.

I hate Obama.

“What the democrats have done to that great city is heartbreaking.”

I’m sorry to hear that.

Sounds like the M.O. of Rats all over the country. And Obama’s goal is to turn the entire USA into Detroit.

It is so irritating to keep reading about this national obsession to try to fix that dump.

We have, here in west Michigan, some of the most dynamic, beautiful, educated, and clean cities in the state, and instead of bringing industries here where we will appreciate them, they try to shoe-horn them into the MegaGhetto like that is the only thing that was wrong with Detroit.

What fool would put their company in a city run by Obama’s thug friends, that is broke and falling apart? You might as well put it in Ontario if the region is that great.

True, cut off the money to most American cities and Detroit will look like a paradise in comparison. After all, look at the debt that Chicago or LA is running.

Looking at the old photos of Detroit is enough to make a person turn white at the extreme changes.

Detroit almost looked like a European city in the early 20th century.

That’s where my dad’s side of the family was until shortly before the riots. They worked for Ford, in the corporate office and on the line. Good jobs and excellent quality of life.
Then, something happened.
