The Obama administration, despite the nation’s economic woes, effectively killed the job-producing Keystone Pipeline last month. The Arab Spring is turning the oil production of Libya and other Arab nations over to the Muslim Brotherhood. Iraq is distancing itself from the U.S. And everyone recognizes that Iran, whose crude supplies are critical to the European economy, will do anything it can to frustrate America’s strategic interests. In the face of all of this, Obama insists on cutting back U.S. oil potential with outrageous restrictions.
Part of Obama’s apparent war against U.S. energy independence includes a foreign-aid program that directly threatens my state’s sovereign territory. Obama’s State Department is giving away seven strategic, resource-laden Alaskan islands to the Russians. Yes, to the Putin regime in the Kremlin.
The seven endangered islands in the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea include one the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. The Russians are also to get the tens of thousands of square miles of oil-rich seabeds surrounding the islands. The Department of Interior estimates billions of barrels of oil are at stake.

More importantly, where is the treaty and where is the Senate?
If you look at a map, look at the boundary line, and study the history of the negotiations surrounding Alaska and other territories in that area, you will find things are pretty clear, and the silence that is heard is the silence of reason.
There is nothing nefarious about this.
FYI.
They have never really been a part of the US. One of the islands has had a Russian base on it for decades.
Basically they are undefendable because of their position in the arctic sea and there is no point to holding on to the fiction that they are part of the US.
This is a dead issue.

You are espousing common sense, something that is sometimes not welcome around here, especially when the bugles are blowing.
But, only an idiot with no knowledge of history or geography could look at this as any kind of “giveaway”. You can’t give something away that isn’t yours.
It’s no more a giveaway than if we relinquished our claims on Nimzhy Novgorad; it’s Russian and the islands in question are Russian. The people who live there pay Russian taxes, they vote in Russian elections, and they speak Russian. And why not - they ARE Russian.
Won’t stand a chance (i.e., the treaty).
And just you wait for Obama’s second term. Comrade Obama will be more “FLEXIBLE”.

The agreement was negotiated in total secrecy. The state of Alaska was not allowed to participate in the negotiations, nor was the public given any opportunity for comment. This is despite the fact the Alaska Legislature has passed resolutions of opposition – but the State Department doesn’t seem to care.
The imperiled Arctic Ocean islands include Wrangel, Bennett, Jeannette and Henrietta. Wrangel became American in 1881 with the landing of the U.S. Revenue Marine ship Thomas Corwin. The landing party included the famed naturalist John Muir. It is 3,000 square miles in size.
Northwest of Wrangel are the DeLong Islands, named for George Washington DeLong, the captain of USS Jeannette. Also in 1881, he discovered and claimed these three islands for the United States. He named them for the voyage co-sponsor, New York City newspaper publisher James Gordon Bennett. The ship’s crew received a hero’s welcome back in Washington, and Congress awarded them gold medals.
In the Bering Sea at the far west end of the Aleutian chain are Copper Island, Sea Lion Rock and Sea Otter Rock. They were ceded to the U.S. in Seward’s 1867 treaty with Russia.

You should actually read the treaty and look at a map. As the the treaty stated, Copper Island is part of the Kormandorski couplet, not the Aleutian Islands. The treaty actually specifies between the Copper Island and Attou (the end of the Aleutian chain) as the dividing border.

All of the islands referenced are west of the maritime border from the 1867 treaty. They are on Russian side.

No negotiations regarding the U.S.-Russia maritime boundary have occurred since 1990, when the U.S.-USSR Maritime Boundary Agreement was signed. The negotiations that led to that agreement did not address the status of Wrangel Island, Herald Island, Bennett Island, Jeannette Island, or Henrietta Island, all of which lie off Russia’s Arctic coast, or Mednyy (Copper) Island or rocks off the coast of Mednyy Island in the Bering Sea. None of the islands or rocks above were included in the U.S. purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867, and they have never been claimed by the United States, although Americans were involved in the discovery and exploration of some of them.
The U.S.-USSR Maritime Boundary Agreement, signed by the United States and the Soviet Union on June 1, 1990, defines our maritime boundary in the Arctic Ocean, Bering Sea, and northern Pacific Ocean. The U.S.-USSR Maritime Boundary Agreement is a treaty that requires ratification by both parties before it formally enters into force. The treaty was made public at the time of its signing. In a separate exchange of diplomatic notes, the two countries agreed to apply the agreement provisionally. The United States Senate gave its advice and consent to ratification of the U.S.-USSR Maritime Boundary Agreement on September 16, 1991.
The Russian Federation informed the United States Government by diplomatic note dated January 13, 1992, that it “continues to perform the rights and fulfill the obligations flowing from the international agreements” signed by the Soviet Union. The United States and the Russian Federation, which is considered to be the sole successor state to the treaty rights and obligations of the former Soviet Union for the purposes of the U.S.-USSR Maritime Boundary Agreement, are applying the treaty on a provisional basis, pending its ratification by the Russian Federation.
The United States regularly holds discussions with Russia on Bering Sea issues, but these discussions do not affect the placement of the U.S.-Russia boundary or the jurisdiction over any territory or the sovereignty of any territory. The U.S. has no intention of reopening discussion of the 1990 Maritime Boundary Treaty.

Daniel DeNardo claims interests in five islands which lie north of Siberia in the Arctic Ocean: Wrangel, Herald, Henrietta, Bennett and Jeannette. When he attempted to record these interests in the Nome recording district, the recorder refused to accept DeNardo’s documents, taking the position that the islands are not within the Nome recording district.
DeNardo sued, seeking equitable relief and damages. He alleged that “[t]he State of Alaska being responsible for the designation of the recording district must designate a place of recordation for plaintiff’s property rights as it has recorded other’s [sic] property rights in the state of Alaska.”
The State moved to dismiss, claiming that it lacks authority to designate recording districts for the Arctic Islands. The State’s motion was granted. DeNardo appeals. We affirm.
The Arctic Islands are not located within the Nome recording district or any of the State’s other thirty-three recording districts. Under AS 40.17.020(a), DeNardo’s documents may not be recorded in any recording district in Alaska.
Moreover, the State has no duty to create a recording district for the Arctic Islands, as it is not governing them. The question of sovereignty over the Arctic Islands is a subject committed to the executive and legislative branches of the United States government. See United States v. Louisiana, 363 U.S. 1, 35 (1960). Until and unless the United States government indicates that the Arctic Islands are part of the State of Alaska, the State has no duty to accept for recording documents affecting title to real property on the islands.

I supported Joe Miller, but this might explain why he was unable to beat a write-in candidate for the election.
