Does eating organic food make you a jerk?

Jerk.

What image does that word conjure up? Is it your uncle Joe, who lives in a McMansion, complete a large staff to serve his every whim while never saying, "thank you"?

Perhaps your sister’s boyfriend who drives the Bugatti Veyron and talks about it to anyone who will listen?

Maybe a friend of a friend who dons thousands of dollars of exclusive designer clothing to go to the grocery store?

Or, perhaps, it's your next-door-neighbor who buys and eats organic food.

Whaaaat?

A new and very provocative study, "Wholesome Foods and Wholesome Morals? Organic Foods Reduce Prosocial Behavior and Harshen Moral Judgments," by Dr. Kendall J. Eskine from Loyola University New Orleans, indicates that buying and consuming organic foods can actually induce self righteousness and selfish behavior.

In other words, it can make you a jerk.

What influences someone to go organic? Organic foods in general cost more than conventionally grown foods, so why pay more for already expensive food?

Some controversial explanations are provided by the author of the study:

Most of those I have crossed paths that are into the “Organic foods movement” are typical Leftist snobs all desireous of approval by others in the Leftist snob In-crowd.

Shopping at Whole Foods doesn’t make one a jerk. Jerks just shop there a lot.

Nailed it.

I've long pointed out to my kids, when at Whole Foods, how likely you are to be rammed into by another shopper or encounter an aisle blocked by another cart, because it's loaded with liberals who are incredibly self absorbed. We even had another car back into our parked vehicle, and do you think this "caring, morally upright" liberal left a note? I don't think I need to answer that.

In truth, so long as you wash your food, it's just about the same as organic because few pesticides are systemic and fertilizers simply provide Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus and it doesn't matter how they're applied, that's what the plant uptakes.

Agreed. We've eaten organic food for thousands and thousands of years. Not everybody born before fertilizer was a jerk.

My garden was too until I had to get the Sevin dust after some nasties. May have to get it out again this evening. But then home farmers and gardeners are a different breed than those hoity toity holier than thou pasty freaks to shop at Whole Foods and such.

I like organic food, preferably that I shoot myself.

How do you do it so that the tomatoes don't have that burned taste of gunpowder?

Not if you’re Republican. I eat organic stuff out of my garden all the time and my eggs are too.

I just ask these “organic” freaks: “So, did you take Organic Chemistry, the chemistry of living things?”

“Well then, any foods raised with organic chemicals would be a good thing, right?”

Most Americans have no clue how to take rabbits, turkey and deer, or grow their own food - or even raise chickens. A lot of folks, lacking this knowledge, will probably die off in the next couple of years.

Many who grow their own food have discovered the hard way that their crops have been infected by the biggest jerk on the planet, Monsanto.

Of course pesticides & herbicides are organic. So are GMO foods. The nuts have hijacked the word to try and make it mean something it doesn’t mean.

Any carbon-based molecule is organic. CH4 (methane) is the simplest organic molecule. Petroleum products are all organic. So is cyanide.

On Thursday afternoon I was killing some time and stopped by a nearly defunct shopping center where my son had taken some music lessons years ago. On the side is a bunch of scrub where there happens to be a patch of Greenbrier. This is a wild weed that grows up a bit like a vine and has nasty thorns. However, the new shoots and early leaves are quite good and can be eaten raw. I learned about it years ago in one of Euell Gibbons’ hippy-dippy books about eating weeds. “Organic”, free and tasty.

While I was picking, a young fellow pulled his car up into the shade of a tree there. I was a little hard pressed to explain what I was doing, as my Spanish is a bit rusty and his English was no better. :(

The rich hippy dippy organic types sit around blowing through their trust finds and smugly sniffing their own smug farts...

Vermonters will tell you straight to your face that their farts smell better than yours; especially those Texan ones.

All that chili, you know...
