In a private room at the 2001 Odyssey strip club, dancers with names like Candy, Bella and Ferrari sit on a high-backed velvet bench and video chat with online customers from across the country. For a price, they'll disrobe and move into an adjacent room to dance.
Web customers pay a monthly membership fee for these virtual interactions. And some of them, the club says, end up coming to Tampa for a trip inside the spaceship-topped nude club on N Dale Mabry Highway where they can visit the strippers in person.
By August just in time for the Republican National Convention operators of Club Cam Systems plan to roll out similar ventures at two other Tampa adult clubs. Their goal: drum up thousands of dollars online while giving some of the estimated 50,000 GOP convention visitors a taste of the adult entertainment awaiting them when they arrive.
"For the RNC, people need places to go. We're trying to create the awareness for people who come to Tampa that Tampa has a lot of things to do," said Russ Bruno, an owner of Club Cam Systems.
It's a true "hub and spoke" model of social media marketing that's being synchronized just in time for arriving delegates, politicians, lobbyists and other tourists. Like other businesses pitching for convention visitors, the clubs are updating their Facebook pages and Twitter accounts to drive traffic to their websites, which drives foot traffic to the clubs.
"I think Tampa may be breaking new ground with this," said Glen Gilmore, a consultant and digital marketing professor at Rutgers University. "It's a dramatic shift in marketing, and I guess what's happening in Tampa just reinforces the fact that traditional marketing is yielding to new media and new marketing."

So this is why Ron Paul and his delegates want to make it all the way to the convention!
Bill Clinton will now volunteer as a Republican Delegate from New York.
I had thought all the strippers would be named Julia.
You got pics, you didn't say what of.
Now if you want pics of women...
It seems like someone told me a couple of years ago that a stripper's stage name was their pet's name followed the street they lived on.
You get the idea.
Oh great....now we have virtual prositution.
You should have seen the hilarious newspaper stories during the 2004 GOP Convention in NYC, which renominated GWB. The Times Square hookers were fuming to reporters that all these uptight Republicans and their families had come to town, and the sin business went dead.
No kidding, some of them remembered the Democratic Convention in NYC a few years earlier, and they asked why the Republicans couldn't be more like them.
My guess is that the virtual prostitution business will flop in Tampa, except for a few Beltway RINOs who stop by.
In Charlotte, the strip clubs are getting ready for the DNC convention with folks like Burt and Ernie getting ready to do lap dances for Bawney and O wow wow.
Fido Sepulveda, I remember her well....
Do they have different orafi in Tampa?
Live internet pay porn. So why is this being touted as an item that can be target marketed to the GOP convention, or anybody at a fixed geographic locale for that matter? Surely it can be marketed internet wide can’t it?
Atlanta used to be the epicenter of strip clubs. I don’t know if it still is. I do know that I have never seen one as tacky as the Odyssey 2001. But, I don’t get out much anymore.
This exact same scenario played out 48 years ago in San Francisco.
The Dem action just hasn’t been the same since Teddy Kennedy’s departure.
The local paper here has been pushing stories about sex and the RNC for a while. I suspect there's nothing they would like better than to catch some GOP guy with something worth reporting on... ya know what I mean? These are the MSM people who scream if they catch one of us jaywalking - you know what they're going for... our people better be careful in Tampa.
