AURORA, Colo. – Police have a “person of interest” in custody in connection with the robbery of the Wells Fargo back at 15301 E. Hampden Avenue Saturday afternoon.

Immediately following the robbery, police closed the intersection of Iliff and Buckley after reports the suspect might have taken hostages.

According to our crew on the scene, police stopped and searched nearly two dozen cars. The adult occupants of the vehicles were handcuffed during the investigation.

they really need to know that the law applies to them also and breaking it in the pursuit of their duties needs to be prosecuted and punished as necessary.

I'm not saying the law shouldn't affect cops. I make excuses for no man, if they truly break the law.
You're understanding of things is commendable, unlike the rest of FR. On here, while I'm trying to get my aggregated news I can't get anywhere else I have be deluged by so-called fellow patriots who, as fas as I know, would rather put a bullet in my back as much as spit on me because I am a cop.
Because of the so-called patriotism on FreeRepublic I now have to wonder if the next so-called patriot I come into contact with is going to be just as dangerous & life-threatening to me as a drugged-out gangbanger.
There is constructive criticism and deserved oversight, then there is directed hate and here on FreeRepublic there is nothing but hate and veiled threats for all law enforcement.
I'm going to keep getting my aggregated news here because it's the best spot for it, but I feel compelled to defend my brothers and sisters even if it's with facetious sarcasm.

“Oh, cut the cops a break! They are just following orders.

That argument didn’t hold water at Nuremburg.”
************************************************************

Well, you are correct—they weren’t “just following orders”. What they were doing was DOING THEIR JOB & CATCHING THE BAD GUY. Sometimes that causes some inconvenience. I’d much rather having cops doing good and actually doing their jobs (as these cops were doing) than have them do bad things (such as the goon cops in Wisconsin suppressing the exercise of free speech by pro-Walker demonstrator).

Let’s cut the cops some slack when they are after bad guys using legal means—and being successful.

“All adult occupants of two dozen cars???

For what, the crime of Driving while Hispanic?”

I sure saw quite a few in the video that didn’t look Hispanic.

I have not read one post here that spouts any hate towards police officers. I do not hate police officers. What I hate is the sometimes blatant overuse of force and lack of discretion of the police force these days.

The feeling you note towards “Law Enforcement Officers” is due to their own actions and attitude to ordinary law abidibg citizens. At one time on this forum, they were universaly respected. Their actions and deeds changed that. They have no one to blame but themselves. At one time I taught my children and grandchildren that the police were their friends. They should not fear them. I no longer do that. I now fear the police more than I fear the criminal.

God-given rights guaranteed by the Constitution, be damned. Catch the bad guys and [bleep] everything else. A police state is a safe state.

(Do I really have to /s this too?)

I now fear the police more than I fear the criminal.

Which is fine because it's a free country. But there, of course, is the reason why I now believe that so-called patriots are just as untrustworthy as criminals and would like to kill me just as much as any other cop-hater:
You see all cops as criminals, I see all patriots as untrustworthy anarchists who would like to shoot me if I dare try to investigate a crime.
Which side fosters the "us vs. them" more at this point?

law enforcement: this is the problem, It was not that long ago that you were called a “Peace Officer”, your transformation into Law Enforcement Officer is where the problem lies. No Longer are Police members of the Community, they are nothing more than Jack Booted Thugs, hired to enforce the tyrannical laws set forth by their leaders, with no regards for the truth, the law, or the constitution, and of course the RIGHTS of the CITIZENS to live their lives without Jack Booted thugs trying to TAX US at every step for merely living our lives and then you come by and shoot our dogs just for fun, For the most part your job is to TAX THE CITIZENS through UNCONSTITUTIONAL INFRACTIONS, whereby the defendant does not have a RIGHT to A Full and Complete Legal Defense. Not to mention you are all LIARS. So if you think the people are against you, you are absolutely correct, but you did it to yourselves.

Sig Heil you jack booted thug.

Defend your brother and sisters? As opposed to defending the constitutional rights of Americans? That tells me right there what side your on. If you cant even concede that detaining innocent bystanders and subjecting them to searches is against the constitution then there is no hope for you. Again I have witnessed first hand the overuse of force and lack of common sense, discretion by your “brothers and sisters” and it has left a very bad taste in my mouth. I now fear the police more than I ever did.

Not to mention the cops in New Orleans going door to door and confiscating the weapons of residents after Katrina. But they were only following proper procedure, right?

The first, fourth and fifth amendments were contravened here, and I am gobsmacked that a fellow citizen entrusted with upholding the law (the highest of which is the Constitution), is defending these blatant jackboot tactics.

SHAME ON YOU!

We civilians think current LEOs are generally out of touch with people in at least two ways.

We think they don’t appreciate or zealously guard our constitutional rights.

We also think LEOs tend to circle the wagons and give their blue brothers a pass when they violate our rights.

Your post sounds like you are coming from the perspective of one of the above criticisms. Either you see no violation of rights here, or you just feel the need to back up your blue brothers.

Either way, we middle class civilians who have rabidly supported the police for several decades and always saw them on are side, are becoming wary of the modern LEO community to actually serve and protect us.

Now why is that? Why are we growing increasingly concerned that the police see all civilians as the enemy rather than just the people we consider the bad guys, like hardened criminals. Not that we believe LEOs are out to get us. Just that we believe that in their zeal to get the bad guys, the LEOs no longer respect the rights of civilians. It is pretty mild now, but I see that lack of respect for constitutional rights getting worse over time, in the LEO communities zeal to get the bad guys.

Combine this with the outrageous activity of TSA, which I acknowledge is not LEO, but we civilians feel more and more like we are living in a police state.

For my part, I am more than willing to risk the impact of bad guys on my life resulting from LEOs completely respecting my constitutional rights, for me to enjoy the full liberty of my inviolable constitutional rights. In a free Republic, there we enjoy a bit less security as a trade-off for our liberty. I won’t surrender my liberty, or portions thereof, like being subjected to unreasonable search at DUI checkpoints for example, just to insure my security.

I’m sorry you can’t see that pulling over cars and handcuffing the occupants without the due process of reasonable suspicion, is not a violation of people’s rights to be secure in their person against unreasonable searches. The police had a good reason to want to do mass random searches, but they had no constitutional power to do so. That’s the breaks. They can’t just violate people’s rights because the ends justify the means. They can’t.

But they do. And that is why more of us middle class civilians who have a lifetime of blind support for the police are becoming increasingly concerned about the current LEO community and the trend toward an increasing police state.

I think they did what was correct. They prevented a kidnapping and possible homicide. The circumstances required them to take such action.

Incarcerating people for abuse of themselves is another story. If the meth heads want to ingest poison why stop them? Pile it as high as an elephants eye and watch em drop like flies! Problem solved and no dogs killed.

I believe in the old days, the police would have stopped cars and talked to drivers, asking if they have seen anything and analyzing the behavior of the people in the car, see how nervous they got.

It is not like the police can’t cordon off an area after a crime and discuss the crime with people. That is not a violation of constitutional rights, as far as I know, and the police have done this for decades.

My problem with this incident described is that the police searched cars and handcuffed innocent people during the searches. That is clearly unconstitutional and I’m sorry you see nothing wrong about it or you do but your support for your blue brothers over-rides that. I don’t want to put words in your mouth.

OK, thanks for clearing up for me that this is less an issue of constitutional legality than it is just defending the thin blue line, right or wrong. I figured it had to be one of the two, so now I understand. Right or wrong, it is necessary for the LEO to defend his brothers and sisters. It sounds like you do know they were violating people's constitutional rights, but feel compelled to defend their tactics anyway. That is how your statement comes across.

I wonder how they dealt with people who may have had their dogs with them. Are people allowed to secure their animals before hand or what?

I respect the police and over all don’t fear them, unless it comes to my dogs. Then I fear the police.

When we take our dogs to the park or vet, we usually stop for a FORTY FOUR oz :p cherry limeade and my youngest Boxer will do a low growl.

If we were pulled over and handcuffed—would my dog then be shot because she growled?

What happened to these people doesn’t sit right. I want people safe and I don’t hate the police but there is a line and the police seem to be stepping over it of late.
