Geoengineering would turn blue skies whiter
New Scientist ^ | 6/1/12 | Jeff Hecht

Blue skies would fade to hazy white if geoengineers inject light-scattering aerosols into the upper atmosphere to offset global warming. Critics have already warned that this might happen, but now the effect has been quantified.

Releasing sulphate aerosols high in the atmosphere should in theory reduce global temperatures by reflecting a small percentage of the incoming sunlight away from the Earth. However, the extra particles would also scatter more of the remaining light into the atmosphere. This would reduce by 20 per cent the amount of sunlight that takes a direct route to the ground, and it would increase levels of softer, diffuse scattered light, says Ben Kravitz of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Stanford, California.

That would have knock-on effects for life – and human technology. The reduction in direct sunlight would impact the solar industry, which relies on direct sunlight to generate much of its power. But the increased indirect sunlight would boost photosynthesis beneath tree canopies. The most visible effect, though, would be above us.

The blue colour of the clear sky comes from light being scattering by molecules in the air. The scattering is much stronger for short blue wavelengths than for longer red wavelengths. Aerosol particles are much larger than molecules in the air, however, and they scatter red light more strongly, which washes out the blue light scattered by smaller molecules and makes the sky brighter and whiter.

These jerks haven’t the least idea what they are doing.

And if it turns out that we are entering a little ice age instead of global warming, and they manage to make things colder, then what are they going to do.

“Oh. Sorry. Give us another government grant and we’ll fix it. I’m not sure quite how we’ll get that stuff out of the stratosphere, but we’ll think of something! Just pay us more money and give us a few Nobel Prizes!”

Why don’t they just squirt a lot more ozone up there? Say, some high-flying drone aircraft to just lay down some very high-level sky-writing.

Probably a cheaper deal than this aerosol stuff they are talking about.

Sounds more plausible to me.

In the movie "The Matrix" there is an expression used one time and, as far as I know, never explained at all. Apparently, the machines started to take over and humans noted that the evil machines were solar-powered -- so the humans "scorched the sky" to deprive the machines of power. The end result was that machines harnessed humans and used them as living batteries instead.

Scorching the sky? The phrase has never made sense to me. But maybe we'll do it by accident.

These people are certifiable. There’s no telling what trouble doing something so stupid on such a large scale would cause...

Good gried what a bunch of stupid wankers.

Then when this goes wrong and causes more global warming, or increased skin cancer, or increases the loss of global angular momentum to the solar wind, the solution will (of course) be "we must convert the United States to a socialist economy or the Solar System is doomed."

The glbal temperature may have gone up 1C over the last 100 years (short term) now lets see if we can lower it by 10C over a decade.

Ozone blocks significant amounts of UVR but insignificant amounts of IRR. It would not have the effect that you think it would.

Anyone attempting to alter the amount of sunlight reaching Earth should be stopped. Period.

Let’s see if I understand this correctly: global warming is caused by human activity and is bad, so we’re going to deliberately disperse sulphates in the upper atmosphere to reflect sunlight, and that’s good.

Well, if a racial spoils system is equality, then I guess this makes just as much logical sense.

I’m thinking, OMG, that imbecile in the White House could give it one imbecilic second’s thought and do it with an executive order! Talk about deer in the headlights. That’s us. And an imbecile is driving the damn car!

Oh, goody, maybe they can turn the sky into a sort of mirror and kill off half the world’s population in the process. (Obscure dystopian anime reference.)

These busybody fools (Stan and Oliver would compete for their attention) have nothing better to do than to create problems to come up with a resolution to fix over and over and over.

The warming kooks may well find the way mankind can actually destroy the environment, and they will be the ones to do it.

I went to the zoo yesterday.

They have a rainforest exhibit...essentially it is a very fancy greenhouse, with a plexiglass roof. Lots of plants in there...and animals.

It reminded me that heat = life.

This is why the zoo does not have a barren glacier animal exhibit.

Even if the earth were warming, why would that be a bad thing?
