Los Angeles (CNN) -- In the wake of a teacher misconduct scandal, Los Angeles school officials have referred the discipline cases of 604 teachers from the past four years to state authorities to decide whether the teachers' licenses should also be revoked, a school spokesman said Thursday.

Of the 604 cases in which teachers were fired or facing discipline, 60 teachers were accused of sexual misconduct with pupils on or off campus or with minors who weren't students, school officials told CNN.

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing will investigate 366 of the 604 teacher cases, spokeswoman Anne Padilla said on Thursday. Most of the cases focused on allegations of teacher misconduct that involved student safety.

The system doesn't know whether any of the teachers who were fired or who left the district are still in the classroom in other school districts, according to Berman and Ekchian.

Once you have a teacher cross the line into sexual misconduct with a student....if I were the principal....I’d call up the parents and give them every bit of data on the situation possible. The parents ought to sue that teacher in open court, for millions, and demand as part of any settlement....no more teaching jobs for the rest of their lives. That’s the only way to get their attention.

Un-freaking-real...

Thank goodness we home school. I probably would have had to hurt somebody by now, if my kids were in that school system.

We're originally from Los Angeles, and took our eldest out of the LAUSD halfway through kindergarten. Our three youngest have never stepped foot on a public school campus.

I have a neighbor who won’t attend Mass because of child abuse scandals. He is a public school teacher.

Of course, if these were Catholic priests this would be news. After all, priests should be examples of virtue, but we shouldn't expect as much of public school teachers. /s

“Sexual misconduct’’ in a pigs eye— it’s rape.

State-controlled media goes bonkers over one priest who abused three kids 30 years ago, yet seems to be OK with what goes on in public schools.

Oh they report it, but they don’t shriek about it for a month.

They’ve let the dogs loose on the public school students. As long as you are in a union, abuse away! That goes for the city police, too!

In public school teacher vernacular it’s called “pass the trash”. (move them from school to school)

When Gray Davis and the Democrats foisted Proposition 8 in California to mandate "class size reduction" the immediate effect was that suburban schools hired the very best of inner city schools. The latter were left to hire the dregs. So "pass the cream" exists as well.
