Springfield Police officer Kevin Ambrose was shot and killed responding to a domestic dispute Monday afternoon at the Lawton Arms apartment complex in the Sixteen Acres neighborhood.
An officer's death was confirmed by Sgt. John Delaney, aide to Police Commissioner William Fitchet. The flag at police headquarters on Pearl Street was lowered to half staff.
An email sent from City Hall notifying city councilors and media that a City Council Casino Site Committee meeting had been canceled "Due to the death of Police Officer Kevin Ambrose."
Springfield City Council President James J. Ferrera III said the regular council meeting Monday night and subcommittee meetings were canceled.
The cancellation is in honor of Officer Kevin Ambrose who was killed today in a senseless act of violence, Ferrera said.
The city and its citizens have been protected by Officer Ambrose for many years, Ferrera said.
Myself and the members of the City Council grieve for him and his family, Ferrera said.
Three people, including Ambrose, were shot. Details about the shootings and the condition of the other two people were not immediately available.
Ambrose joined the Police Department in June 1976.
A resident of Lawton Arms, Michael Palmer, said he saw a uniformed office being put into an ambulance. He said the officer did not appear to be conscious.

I’m sorry this officer was killed. My heart goes out to this man’s family, friends, co-workers, and community for their loss.
What an awful story.
Cop killed a cop. The killer, Bryans, was a corrections officer.
That’s awful. Prayers for this officer’s family.
DAMN! That makes it worse somehow.
Where?
I went to junior high school with officer Ambrose in Springfield many, many years ago. He was a great kid. Excellent athlete. We played golf together a couple of times. He was killed a few blocks away from the school we attended. So sad.
Corrections officers are NOT cops.....far, far from it.
G. Gordon Liddy would attest to that after knowing first hand what a “correction officer” does and what a police officer does. Hell, GG Liddy would alway taunt any caller who identified himself as a “Corrections Officer” saying you do not correct you “Guard”.
Not meaning any disrespect, being a Guard is a terrible and stressful job, and we civilians owe a lot to the guards but it is not “policing” nor “correcting”.
Being a Corrections Officer means ...
- probably unionized
- part of the code blue gang
- been ‘approved’ by the state for firearms handling
- been ‘cleared’ by the state as a stable safe human to entrust others lives with.
“Corrections officers are NOT cops.....far, far from it.”
As far as I’m concerned it’s close enough for government work. There both agents of the state, there both given guns to “correct the public”. Why do you make such a distinction?
“Corrections officers are NOT cops.....far, far from it.”
6 of one, half dozen of another ... not much difference if you ask me other than cops probably have a little bit more sense of entitlement and can get away with a bit more.
