Bloomberg’s Soda Ban,
National Review Online ^ | June 6, 2012 | John Lott

Posted on 06/05/2012 4:48:02 AM PDT by richardb72

Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to ban sugary soft drinks larger than 16 ounces. He believes that by this measure he can reduce obesity. But plenty of evidence indicates that he will fail. The ban will inconvenience people and waste their time, but it will not make them thinner.

Bloomberg didn’t originate this type of idea. Public schools, which hold their students captive for much of their day, have tried a similar approach to making students lose weight. And some have gone further than Bloomberg’s limit on cup size and have banned such drinks completely. But even complete bans haven’t worked. Students simply drink more sugary drinks after school. According to an article in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior analyzing data for Maine, “keeping such drinks out of teenagers’ reach during school hours may not be enough.”

Another study, published in the journal Sociology of Education, examined school bans of junk food and found the same result: “Whether or not junk food is available to them at school may not have much bearing on how much junk food they eat.”

There are many ways to eat or drink “too many” calories. . . .

my pre-written response to all things Bloomberg:

Bloomers is a Crony-capitalist, nebbish, poor little rich boy, self hating jew, tiny buttwipe of a man...the only reason he is probably not a fag (the jury is still out) is that he has the greatest aphrodisiac of all time, billions of dollars....he decries the 2nd amendment, but whines about how the enemy’s first amendment rights to worship are being usurped....even though Islam is NOT a religion but a murder cult.....and dont get me started on salt, transfats, cigarettes and sugar

...This is just awful! What WILL work then? Sewing their little pie holes shut? Jail time? Chinese water torture? Tar and feathers? Whatever it takes!!

What an arrogant pr*** to think he alone can change a group of people by way of his royal edict.

Like you said -don’t get me started!

Nothing will work. We’ll eat and eat until we waddle off this mortal coil.

If he's really worried about obesity in NYC, maybe Bloomberg should outlaw elevators.

Add MICROCHIPS to the Eeeeeeviill slosh.

THEN you can trace where the little tykes got it, and HANG the soda ‘pushers’.

all of those bread items are still carbs, just like soda..white breads don’t have any nutritional value really and for sugar sensitive people, doesn’t matter if they eat white carbs or drink white carbs-it’s still sugar to your body.
The only difference is the liquid sugar hits the bloodstream quicker-I have low blood sugar and I know every sugar fact in the book...

But what an a**hat! Can’t get a drink larger than 16ozs? Then buy 3-8oz drinks! Maybe it will help the kids with their math skills if nothing else.

The Official War on Fat and Food has begun...maybe the FLOTUS will give him a special ‘warrior’s’ medal for his valiant fight in the great ‘Battle of Adipose’...

I’m amazed that people are suddenly up in arms over this soda ban. Bloomberg has been banning things for years and the only people to speak up were freepers. When he banned smoking (especially from private clubs), I was openly anti-Bloomberg. I refused to vote for him because I believe (and still believe) that he told a pregnant woman to “kill it.” How could anyone doubt that story today?

One thing you forgot to say about him: he’s a dwarf.

he represents the lollipop guild....(as a 6'1" NYer [State]....I do not want to look down on him for his size....just his elitism.)

As a petite person, I feel I can look down on him for his size (and a whole bunch of other things).

Batteries cause obesity. My wife and I banned toys that use electricity from our home and don’t have cable/satellite TV, and that’s been a major contributor to raising healthy kids who are not exposed to too much Hollywood. My kids play with balls, climb trees, follow streams, track/trail/stalk deer, build with Dupols/Legos/2-by-4s, shoot pistol/rifle/archery, and otherwise move their bodies all the time. They are allowed to eat almost anything they want but would rather grab an apple or a banana and run back to do something than sit and eat chips or drink soda (even when we have the junk in the house).

he probably wears lifts...

but you answered my question....as a petite person, you are the reason I do not hold size as a barometer ; )~

Of course my liking small women, probably does not transfer to most men, especially bloviating elitist men.

my kids did all the things your kids do....but they had all the electronics they could stomach.

we hunt and fish together and all three of my boys played little league, they also are my personal computer techs 2 are college grads....one going for his doctorate in engineering and the 3rd is in college....

nothing wrong with technology....it is where the jobs are.

being a luddite is a dead end in this society....

that being said if society crumbles my kids can (and have) butcher their own deer and reload their own ammo(I stockpile components.)....and rebuild engines.

Bloomberg sarcastically dismisses this point: “Your argument, I guess, could be that it’s a little less convenient to have to carry two 16-ounce drinks to your seat in the movie theater rather than one 32-ounce.”

That was the first thought I had when I read the headline: what's to stop me from buying two 16-oz. (or 3 or 4, for that matter - the HORROR!).

Bloomberg has always been a bit of a dictatorial busybody, but in his dotage, he seems to be getting worse by the day.

This is about tax revenue, not obesity. Think about it... If a 16 ounce soda cost $1.29 and 32 oz cost $1.69 and the tax rate is say 10% then the gubmint stands to make 17 cents more if the consumer decides to purchase 2 sodas.

We chose differently. At least for my kids, I decided that electronic toys were not a positive. They use technology, but their entertainment is active and outdoors, except for novels.

I agree. Not just batteries in toys, but batteries in remote controls. Elevators should only go to odd numbered floors. Ban taxis and make people walk to the bus stop...

Does the mayor have the authority to ban foods or is he just suggesting this?

I felt that term limitations were going to be his Waterloo. that didn’t work.... lets hope he goes away quietly after this term.

it would be better if he had a Danny DaVito complex.

or a Joe Pesci complex.

The voters disregarding the term limits, disheartened me more than anything I’ve ever had to face as a NYer. And as you know, that’s a lot!
