A U.S. official confirmed that a Monday drone strike in Pakistan killed al Qaeda leader Abu Yahya al-Libi, the most serious blow to the battered terror network since the death of its leader Osama bin Laden.
Al-Libi's death, which came on the third consecutive day of CIA drone strikes in the Pakistani tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, is a serious knock to what remains of al Qaeda's Pakistan-based core leadership.
(Excerpt) Read more at cbsnews.com ...
Al-Libi was the key organizer in Pakistan, more so than bin Laden, and the most important front line commander.
Zawahiri is next.
next
Before he escaped from Bagram in 2005, we got his DNA so ID is not in doubt.
Hmmm, how extrajudicial of dear leader.
Talk about doing a 180.
Any word if “Yabba-Dabba-Do” survived?
Remember how being third in line in Al Qaeda was the most dangerous job. I think that is now second in line. Zawahiri leads a charmed life....
Number Two is now Number Two!
Thanks for the update, g! Dirt nap for the troglodyte! Many, many more to go...
nothing like al libi libi libi...with a drone on its label label label...sending him to his virgins

Good thing we have a democrat president, if he was a republican the loyal opposition would be threatening impeachment for war crimes.

Assuming Zawahiri isn’t the one dropping dimes.

You beat me to it. Yabba-Dabba-Do better watch his back.

I don’t think Zawahiri is lucky. He is being protected by the Pakis and probably hiding out in a city like osama was.
They might just have a virgin shortage in the Islamic hereafter.
Abu Yahya - AMF!
...never mind.
Z and his egytians didn’t get along with al-libi (libyan) and the rest of AQ.
Z could have ratted him out and now can take over AQ completely.
I am doubtful that Z is in Pakistan. There have been many reports that he bailed for Somalia and Sudan years ago to get the muslim brotherhood in line.
However, Z is married into the Paki Pakhtun and that gives him protection and speaks to his staying in Pakistan.
However, AQ is going to Syria to team with the muslim brotherhood and create a platform there. Z would find his skills and connections much more valuable in that theater.
Lots of weapons going into Syria along the N coast by way of Qatar and Egypt.
Syria is going to be a balkan style blood bath and the Alawites are likely to be exterminated. Ethnic cleansing has nothing on religious cleansing.
Wag The Dog?
(Wisconsin/Walker issue going down in flames for the Dems tonight?)
Maybe Nadil Hasan will request his presence at trial as a character witness...
BTW, al-libi is the most HVT we have ever degraded by UAV - Hellfire. Very good day down range.
Celebrate good times!
If you haven’t noticed the CIA has exaggerated the importance of these kills for many years. Prior to OBL death there were several #3 kills. After OBL’s death there were several #2 kills. Many of them weren’t even on the most wanted terrorist lists prior to the kill (I checked).
You never here CIA say this guy was #5 or #7 or whatever.
In reality Saif Adel has been most wanted Al Qaeda leader under Zawahiri since the capture of KSM in 2003. He’s the real #2.
This guy had a $1 million reward on his head.

Many Al Qaeda leaders have $5 million reward or more so how the heck can this guy be #2???
Thanks gandalftb.
Al-Libi no longer liv-ee.

THREAD BUMP.
Thanks for the ping gandalftb.
Rankings are complicated. #2 in AQ doesn’t even get you on the FBI most wanted list.
What the rewards show is the decline of AQ’s influence world-wide.
The jihadist movement is highly fractured, due to internal friction, geography (minimal cell phone use makes distance a factor), and a desire for survival.
Jihadists tend to organize around tasks, not charismatic leaders and they may go dormant for months or years between operations. So their reward value is often based on potential harm they may cause and their degree of trust and knowledge within a particular network.
Often we don’t know haw valuable a terrorist may be, we had al-libi for years before we knew his connection to bin Laden and only then after he escaped.
Most wanted terrorists are experts at identity switching and travel freely often taking over someone else’s identity with permission.
The muslim world has little identity documentation.
Capture and interrogation would be better. But Obama is too much of a political coward.
