WASHINGTON (AP) The chairman of the District of Columbia Council resigned Wednesday effective immediately after being charged in federal court with lying about his income on bank loan applications.
The bank fraud charge against Kwame R. Brown, one of the most influential power brokers in the D.C. government, is the latest allegation of criminal wrongdoing to roil local politics in the nation's capital. It means further shakeup on the council.
Councilmember Phil Mendelson confirmed to The Associated Press that Brown had resigned. He had submitted a resignation letter by the end of the day.
"I have made some very serious mistakes in judgment for which I will take full responsibility," Brown wrote in a letter Wednesday to the Council secretary, a copy of which was obtained by the AP. He added later, "I have behaved in ways that I should not have. I was wrong, and I will face the consequences of that conduct."

DC is run like a corrupt African kleptocracy. Time for Congress to revoke home rule.
Couldn’t agree more!
“B!t©h set me up!”
Marion Barry, Mayor for Life and Cokeheaded Crook for Life (I wish he had gotten life), is the greatest sexual predator in DC. He’s screwed everybody for over 40 years and has gotten away with it.
I’ll leave the wife-beating story for another time.
I’ve been living up in the Arlington area for two years and can make several observations having watched what transpires across the river in the District.
First, half of the city council has never been investigated for anything. Now, I admit....seven out of thirteen...isn’t a good figure....but it shows that some of them are ethical in nature.
Second, the entire city council runs like a little kingdom where one district demands superior landscaping and a high percentage of police. Another part of the kingdom demands city jobs and school jobs for their folks, which means that they get fewer cops, and more murders in exchange for the jobs.
Third, everyone and their brother, up until a year ago....was stuck on demanding SUVs for city council members. Then someone dragged out the regulation written a decade ago that only city emergency services were allowed SUVs, and suddenly city council members got real quiet about their personal SUVs.
Fourth, each one of these elections you have to run....after someone leaves office in a hurry....costs the district around half-a-million. No one seems to care that this is occurring on a pretty frequent basis.
Finally, if you notice....every single charge over the past twenty years....has come from federal prosecutors....not a district-appointed prosecutor. They won’t dare investigate themselves, but then they get into a situation where you get federal charges, and federal time, in a federal prison.
