My uncle was there too. He was 19. He was killed on July 4.

George W. Bush did give at least one D-Day speech. I’m guessing it was 2004, the 60th anniversary. I thought it seemed a bit dated. I don’t get the same feeling from visiting my great uncle’s grave (whom I do not remember, and connect with only via the family name) as I get from visiting my grandfather’s grave (whom I remember somewhat) as I do from visiting my father’s grave (with whom I had a tight connection)

Around that time (probably closer to 2001), Dave Barry wrote a non-humorous comparison of Gettysburg and Shanksville. Gettysburg was nearly all tourist site and relatively little mourning. Shanksville was then mostly a mourning site but might one day become a tourist site.

Anyway, Bush seemed to be addressing a fair chunk of his speech to those who had a tight connection to the deceased, when I think by the 60th anniversary it’s moderate at best, with some sharing only the family name connection, and others having no connection to the deceased at all. I had wondered if he had cribbed it from the 10th or the 20th anniversary speech.

Time to hear from a Real President: President Ronald Reagans Speech at Point-du-Hoc, Normandy

Such a contrast. . .

It's probably more that Obama considers the defeat of Nazi Germany to be owed to the heroic efforts of the Red Army, and doesn't consider the Second Front to be important enough to be mentioned.

I remember reading something about John Keegan meeting with Clinton before the 50th anniversary commemoration in 1994--and urging him to make sure the Poles were included in the ceremonies. Otherwise Clinton would have been oblivious to the fact that Polish troops had taken part in the invasion of Normandy.

I agree. Obama isn’t a president, he’s a disgrace. Better he should just shut up and stay away from any place of honor connected with our veterans.

For a smile.

Not sure if it’s home-made or not.

Here is a short news piece on President Bush speaking at Normandy on the 60th Anniversary, and includes a reference to Reagan’s speech 20 years earlier and some Reagan footage.

(Man - 30 years since that Reagan speech - I’m getting old!). Anyway - some good words to remember D-Day by.

He gave a speech on the 40th Anniversary of D-Day, but not the 39th or 38th....Obama or Romney will give a speech on the 70th Anniversary. Typically you don’t give a speech every year for D-Day....President Bush certainly didn’t.

Hate to defend obama, but this is making a mountain out of a molehill. Bush didn’t commemorate D-Day every year of his Presidency either. And I doubt Clinton or Reagan did.

Agreed. We also need to remember Obama’s grandfather served in WWII.

That said, any sitting president could always just at least make brief mention of it, through radio address, or on their web sites, or whatever. There are ways to communicate the message.

Yup. Like any other Red Diaper Baby, Hussein has been told from his youngest years that Red Army won WWII.

I watched a clip

I took a few minutes to talk about it with my kids. We read a couple of things (from FR!) and then watched an old wartime (Buy More Bonds!) documentary on it.

They're young, so I didn't delve too deep. But it's still too important to miss.

My oldest and I watched "Midway" a couple of weekends ago. He liked Joe Rochefort's code breaking team. Thought that the idea of "Outsmarting the bad guys" was a pretty darn good one.

I wonder what the Obamas .... or to be fair, 90% of the rest of the country ..... did?

that Red Army won WWII

Well, they certainly helped.

.....Thanks in part to our lend-lease...

.....And the political will to throw a near endless supply of good men into a meat grinder.

On the Western Front, there weren't too many questions about who the good guys were. On the Eastern Front, though, there weren't any good guys, only bad and worse.
