Why that spare tyre could be GOOD for your health (may help to regulate your immune system)

Dieters desperate to get rid of that spare tyre can finally let it all hang out.

That muffin-top could actually help to regulate the immune system and provide a first line of defence against infection and viruses.

A hard-to-shift beer belly could even help regenerate damaged tissue after an injury.

The fatty membrane in the belly, called the omentum, has never seemed to serve much of a purpose.

But now the research by scientists in Chicago has shown it can be a health benefit - and their discovery could lead to the development of new drugs for organ transplant patients with auto-immune diseases such as Lupus and Crohn’s disease.

The omentum lines the abdominal cavity, covering most abdominal organs, and is where fat tissue is stored.

The research team found that cells from this membrane can differentiate into lung-type cells and bone cells.

They now believe the omentum may be assist tissue healing and regeneration.

Clearly, this evolutionary advantage allowed a cave dweller to carry a soft cushion to land on, while chasing their prey and tripping on a root or stone.

[of course, it was an evolutionary disadvantage when the cave dweller had to flee his local brontosaurus]

My theory is, that even if you are overweight, but you eat a fairly-balanced diet, but just eat too much of it, then that isn’t nearly as unhealthy as people think.

The problem is that most overweight peoples’ diets are not balanced, but full of junk food...so basically not all overweight people are necessarily the same.

This is a poor trade off for the inevitable back issues a big beer gut will cause once you hit about 45 to 50. Severe back issues.

This is clearly disinformation for the masses. The one thing that we know is that being overweight caries with it many different problems. If you have developed type 2 diabetes and you manage to get you weight down it is quite likely that you can drop the meds. But beyond that read Reversing Diabetes by Dr. Neal Barnard and discover just what you current diet of animal products is doing to you. It ain’t pretty!

Misleading on many levels. Whether you’re thin or fat you still will have an omentum and the magic cells these people claim can differentiate into other cells.

There might be some truth to this. When I was in my best physical condition as an adult and playing hockey regularly, I used to get sick all the time. I counted 17 different episodes of flu-like or cold-like illnesses over the course of one year.

Never had a problem since then, and I’m in pretty poor shape right now. I even “missed” a couple of serious bouts of the flu that ran through my entire office last winter.

When I needed a valve replacement last year I joked with the nurse about my 30-lb spare tire. She said that the nurses in post-op recovery don’t worry as much about chubby patients vs. skinny people because chubby people tolerate major surgery and “have more reserves” against post-op complications.

This goes up there with "smoking weed improves your personality".
