UN official: Syria aims heavy weapons at UN staff

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — A senior U.N. official says U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the Security Council that U.N. patrols in Syria are being deliberately targeted with heavy weapons and armor-piercing ammunition.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because Thursday's council meeting was private, said Ban also reported repeated instances of firing close to U.N. patrols, apparently to force them to withdraw.

The official said Ban listed several incidents, including one in a town near Homs, where a heavy weapon round landed 150 meters (yards) from a patrol that was going to meet an opposition contact. Later, the patrol noted a surveillance drone overhead.

Ban also told the council that on June 3, an unoccupied U.N. vehicle near Kafr Zeta was hit with armor-piercing ammunition.

International envoy Kofi Annan blamed the failure of his peace plan primarily on the Syrian government Thursday and told the divided U.N. Security Council there must be "consequences" for those obstructing efforts to end the conflict.

Annan spoke amid more signs that diplomatic efforts to restore peace are floundering: U.N. observers came under fire Thursday as they tried to reach the site of the latest reported mass killing in Syria — about 80 people, including women and children who were shot or stabbed.

Annan said the time had come to step up the pressure to keep the violence from spiraling out of control. He urged the council to make clear that there will be "consequences"—usually a code words for sanctions—if his six-point peace plan is... End 300 words excerpted from 1,168 words AP article.

Oh dear. I guess Mr. Assad can expect a very pointed letter from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, a copy of which will go into his permanent record.

Can’t really give the Syrians any grief on this. I think everybody would like to use some heavy weapons on the UN...

The thing that pisses me off about these UN types is that they will let 15K die while having a boondoggle in a 5 star hotel and acting sanctimonious

Can you believe this horsecrap from Blix?
Hussien had run amok, the WMDs had been shipped to the Bakka Valley in Syria and Hans says he is the man because he finds it funny that he was called a poo poo head while he lives the high life and does nothing to stop the killing.

First class UN boondoggle.

The Russians have built some interesting militray stuff. IIRC, this is an example of the mortar they sold to Syria. I bet a round from one of these would ruin a UN picnic.

Thanks Meatloaf. While traditionally we FReepers are not fans of the U.N., Assad's Syrian troops firing on the invited U.N. delegation watchers, does not seem to have any upside to it.

With China, Russia and Iran joining the Arab League group today warning against any "foreign intervention at all" in Syria, which was then coincidentally or not, followed by the Russian ICBM launch over Israel, some country other than the aforementioned countries in short order will be expected to help.

If the U.N. doesn't take substantive immediate action to prevent further massacres in Syria, it's not high math to figure out which country will be tasked with that intervention.

If the UN is going to usurp the power of Congress and direct our military in foreign affairs, I want them useless and tied in knots.

It's a mess. The Israel and the German representatives made very strong, unmistakably clear statements today. With Russia and China aligning themselves with Iran and the Arab League group's "no foreign intervention" message, it's looking very bad for the remaining resistance.

Berlin_Freeper, I only had a few minutes but the videos you linked:

US-Backed Al-Qaeda Unleashed its Bloody Campaign against the Syrian people

and

Syria : Opposition Terrorists Attacked the UN Observers in the City of Khan Sheikhoun

are anti-American, pro-Assad, pro-Ahmadinejad, pro-Hezbollah, anti-Israel, truther versions of the Syrian massacres.

Is that what you want to see in the news?

Sometimes I think its all about UN types using international dollars to boondoggle on a beach for 10 to 15 years and accomplish nothing, all on our dime.

actually if you look at it hats the record of accomplishment.

Good work, if you can get it /s

Carla Del Ponte comes to mind
