(Reuters) - Senator Rand Paul, whose firebrand father Ron has effectively ended his White House bid but still seeks to grow his movement and influence Republicans nationally, endorsed party nominee Mitt Romney on Thursday.
Rand Paul is a conservative Tea Party favorite mentioned as a possible Romney vice presidential pick for the November election. He told the "Hannity" program on Fox News that the time was right to back Romney publicly.
"My first choice has always been my father. He's still my first pick," Rand Paul said.
But the Kentucky lawmaker said that Romney impressed him in a recent private meeting as a responsible leader who shared key principles on family values, closer oversight of the Federal Reserve, congressional prerogatives, and foreign policy.

I guess I should say “this is awesome” before I am called stupid, a moron or Obama supporter...
I swear I am working on my Pavlovian drooling when ever I hear Mitt Romney...
I would have taken any of them over Herman Cain.
Full on BSer
999 beats that.
Lord we are so screwed.
Rand truly is a class act; and, Kentuckyites (sp?) are lucky to have him as their Senator.
Rand is a bright man. I’m not sure if I will hold my nose for Romney or not, but Rand is playing this one perfectly
I’m happy to hear that Rand has his feet planted in reality. Of course, he has to say that he’s for his father, but if he publicly “backs” Romney, it shows that he does have good sense. I think that he might have a good future.
I understand your conflict, as this Bachmann-turned-Santorum supporter wrestled a little with whether I should support my not-even-third-choice, Romney.
I concluded (as a Dad of two currently in uniform and a grandparent of a tyke who deserves the same, precious freedoms that I enjoyed growing up) that I'm all-in for Willard.
On the fear side, I worry about Mister Obama is doing to our defense capability and military; and once he feels more "flexibility", we could reduce our military to near nothing, and put what's left under the UN.
I can't tell whether Mister Obama's economic scorched-earth policies are foolish mistakes or intentional; however either way, I worry that my retirement would be worth little with four more years of Obama's far-left economic experiments.
A new term would mean that Obama's hoards of lawyers would find ways to instill his socialistic medicine nightmare on us. Is there anything more important to us than our health and the good health of our families?
If you are at all inclined toward preserving our Second Amendment rights, Mister Obama's intentions are unmasked with the Fast and Furious attempt to arm the bad guys and falsely accuse the good guys of doing it. It's an extravagant ruse (and luckily a visible failure) but it shows what to expect with four more.
I'll send Willard money; and I'll get up early on election day to be among the first in line to vote for him.
The consequences of an Obama second term are too icky to risk either by not voting or a score settling vote on a third-party weasel.
On the positive side? Romney has been saying some good things lately. Maybe he means them. Come November, my FRiend, I'll risk a vote for Willard.
But, things like this only allow Romney to really pick someone even more liberal than him as a VP. I know the Romney is better argument that Obama is there, the issues are simple on that.
But again, Rand could have put his support out there for Romney after Romney picked at VP. What if Romney really goes stupid on a VP?[yes, i have know idea who would it be]
I’ll in all likelyhood hold my nose, but I’m not crawling over coals for the guy. I’d rather he feel the fire.
Rand for Veep
I am more and more every day torn over Romney. I despise him so much, however, if we end up with a Republican Senate and House, having Obama WILL ensure that NOTHING is done. Look at equal pay this past week. With Romney and his liberalism, everything will pass that he wants because the Republicans won’t go against him at all just like when Bush was President and the Republicans passed EVERYTHING like the drug benefit and No Child Left Behind.
“Romney impressed him in a recent private meeting”
Romney is always having these private meetings with people and then they come out endorsing him and talking about how he’s the real deal Conservative and how he has the plan to save the nation and how he’s for the Second Amendment, despite his actions and words. Why doesn’t he just speak these magic words pubicly?
I bet Romney already gave Rand a heads up on who his VP pick will be. Your thinking is correct though. Thats probably exactly what happened.
I would think that anyone who wants any kind of future in the Republican party has to publicly support Romney . . . ok, some are more convincing than others . . .
I have to say Rand has a grasp on reality. Obama reelection would make representative government a footnote in history. Romney has everything in place to make him the nominee.
Today, there’s no advantage to making enemies of the only person left to replace Obama. Look at history. Particularly, the end of WWII. The time to apply pressure is when you are dividing the spoils.
If Paulbots could grasp this concept rather than continuing to repeat failure, they would be a long way down the path to having a relevant voice.
