'End of the world as we know it': Kaspersky warns of cyber-terror apocalypse
RT.com ^ | June 6, 2012 | Sergey Guneev

After his eponymously-named lab discovered Flame, "the most sophisticated cyber weapon yet unleashed," Eugene Kaspersky believes that the evolving threat of “cyber terrorism” could spell the end of life on Earth as we know it.

Doomsday scenarios are a common occurrence in 2012, but coming from a steely-eyed realist like Eugene Kaspersky, his calls for a global effort to halt emerging cyber threats should raise alarm bells.

A global Internet blackout and crippling attacks against key infrastructure are among two possible cyber-pandemics he outlined.

"It's not cyber war, it's cyber terrorism, and I'm afraid the game is just beginning. Very soon, many countries around the world will know it beyond a shadow of a doubt,” Kaspersky told reporters at a Tel Aviv University cyber security conference.

“I'm afraid it will be the end of the world as we know it," he warned. "I'm scared, believe me."

I am here to tell you, my code is 100% bulletproof against any and all hackers.

You willing to make that guarantee for ALL programmers??

BTW, Laz... would you hit post 16??

Go out on your deck and read a book.

Till susnset, anyway... :-)

I'm really not much a conspiracy nut. I mean, what can we do really? I DO have a Facebook account.

But, I am really trying to prepare for extended power outages... There are LOTS of ways that can happen.

I can't speak for Laz, but she strikes me as one of those controlling high-maintenance chicks. No thanks. Been there, done that. Here's the benefit of the insights I've learned over four decades of experience:

In my 20's I wondered what she'd look like naked.
In my 30's, I wondered what she'd be like in bed.
In my 40's, I wondered what she'd look like without make-up.
In my 50's, I finally realized that the most important thing is what she'd look (and sound) like when she was angry at me.

Cell phones and the Internet are fragile and totally susceptible to biggov control and failure.

Funny how some people mock amateur (Ham) radio.

When they say if sh*t hits the fan, it will be one of the few things that actually work, they are not joking.

I’ve read that the detection profile could be developed relatively quickly, which will cause rejection before it gets into your system. But it may take “months or years” to develop a removal tool.

Just losing power, broadly, in the US would be a first rate disaster.

Agreed. I'm ready.

At a recent Town Meeting, the Sewer Commission chairman gave a presentation for the need to replace a few large pumps at the local Sewage Treatment facility.

I spoke with him after the meeting to get an idea of how prepared they were for a real...I mean a REAL disaster. While trying not seem like a Doomsday nut, I asked him..."What if the grid went down? How long could you operate and pump sewage from residences and stay on top of things?"

He said they have plenty of backup power generation capability and that they have fuel suppliers available at a moments notice in an emergency. He went on about how well they did during the last big hurricane and blah, blah, blah.

As delicately as I could I asked, "But what if your fuel suppliers have no fuel? How long could you operate?"
His reply? One week. Tops.

I am now working on getting a check valve installed in the main sewer line that runs out of my house. Right where it enters the house. When TSHTF I do not want it flowing back into my house and out the toilet...after...it hits the fan, so to speak.

“Oh please. First of all, humans did quite nicely before electronic technology came along. Second, humans do not represent all life on Earth. Human civilization will be affected, surely.”

I don’t like being the party-pooper but you have to understand that it’s not the loss of technology that is so frightening. It is the fact that we now have electronically controlled automatic weapons that can vaporize the entire surface of the planet several times over. As far as we know, this was never a part of world history until about 50 years ago. The internet for most citizens is less than 30 years old. The combination of the two can be utterly devastating.

It helps me sleep at night thinking that most of these systems are very very secure and completely separate from outside connections. But remember, it only takes the breach of one system by a suicidal hacker to start a global nuclear exchange. With the tiny wireless chips and drones of today, even an off-line system can be remotely compromised. Also, human stupidity is more vast than the universe…

Yeah, but, like, does this mean FR will slow down again? And what about youtube? Can I still watch Adele videos and stuff?

"That’s a world view absent of the knowledge of the historicity of a resurrected Christ, in whom ALL THINGS are under His authority.

No, not necessarily. Just one that doesn't know the end of the story as you and I know it. I can and do totally believe it AND agree with your proclamation. Think about it, as a Software Engineer, I TOTALLY see the slow creep of things setting in place for HOW the Tribulation can and will take place. How else do you think "All men, great and small, rich and poor could not buy or sell without the Mark of the Beast" will be possible. Only by a worldwide infrastructure meltdown in which totalitarian governments tell the feared masses the only way to survive is complete control and rationing. The meltdown Kaspersky describes, unbeknownst to him, is just the catalyst to make the above fulfillment of what is prophesized in the Book Of Revelation.

It's not a matter of IF - but WHEN. The HOW is being put into place slowly but surely.

Remember Y2K? Seriously, go outside and read a book. the grid can go down today, you will not die immediately. You will be warmer in the summer, colder in the winter.

Read a book, take a walk, communicate with your family. Not a big deal.

I have a relative who was having computer problems.

He called the helpline and was working the problem with some guy in Malaysia. The helpline guy finally said, “I think the problem may require a hard boot.”

He then proceeded to TURN OFF THE POWER TO THE HOUSE. I guess it is the “smart meter” tech, but now some guy in another country can turn off the power to your house.

We are in deep doo doo.

What if they use signals sent through the power grid to activate the backdoors they built into our computer chips?

Yikes! I gotta get a solar power/battery backup for my off-grid computer!

I am really getting tired of this “Y2K” no big deal. We worked day and night before the roll over to make sure our systems located in hospitals did not crash. We had run the date forward in the labs, and the system crashed. A lot of people worked a lot of hours so smart guys can spout off, not knowing how close they dodged a bullet.

Scary. Okay folks what is the “be prepared” list!

You don't know the "half of it." Most is classified...

For starters, keep at least a few weeks worth of cash on hand and never use your debit card online; use only a CC or Paypal.

Indeed. Many people should consider buying a multiband radio even if they don't yet have an amateur broadcast license - just for learning how to listen.

Besides, in a real SHTF scenario, official call signs will probably be shelved for the duration.
