Don Rickles nearly hijacked the American Film Institute’s tribute to Shirley MacLaine on Thursday night at Sony Pictures Studios, unleashing a trademark barrage of insults that took aim at President Obama, Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson and the honoree herself.
“I shouldn’t make fun of the blacks,” Rickles said, and then proceeded to do just that: “President Obama is a personal friend of mine. He was over to the house yesterday, but the mop broke.”
The black-tie crowd, gathered to celebrate MacLaine, the 40th recipient of the AFI’s Life Achievement Award, alternately gasped at the 86-year-old comic’s put-downs and then found themselves laughing and applauding.

“Shirley,” Rickles, living up to his moniker as Mr. Warmth, began as he rose to his feet from a table near the center of the room. “I never read your books, and I don’t plan to.”

Characterizing Barack as a mop-person is entirely too kind.
I remember a Don Rickles line from 30 years ago.
It went something like this (him talking):
“I was in Japan last month, and I can tell you the Japanese people are so polite. Everywhere I went they said, ‘ah-so’, ‘ah-so’.”
He’s always been abrasive, but at least he knows it. I wouldn’t hold anything against him at his age.

One of the funniest things I ever heard Rickles say was on the Tonight Show. Sinatra was one of the guests, and Don turned to him and said, “Frank, I just talked with your friend Guido Cabaletti, and he told me to tell you that the package has been delivered.”
Of course, it’s okay to make jokes about Italians.
That’s his schtick. If anyone is shocked then tough sh!t.
Hope his funeral plans are taken care of.

What a stupid Headline for the article... I would have been “Shocked” if Rickles didn’t do his insult everyone routine. Hell, it has been his schtick to be an equal opportunity offender for 60 years for Christ sake.

He’s 86. Over the last 60-70 years, he’s been to every party, toured every country, dined with kings and presidents etc...he’s literally been everywhere. This is his thing and the idea that he’d change due to some politically correct BS is laughable. What will they do? Blacklist him?

How true that is! I often watch clips on youtube of the Dean Martin celebrity roasts. Those were some of the most hilarios things ever said. They had kinds of politically incorrect racial humor. I was watching Don Rickes on Youtube the other night roasting Sammy Davis, Jr. and even Sammy was busting a gut laughing at Don’s insults.
I actually was depressed watching because it occurred to me that you could never get away with this kind of humor nowadays.
