Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Diamond Jubilee a few days ago — that's 60 years on the throne. Just to put it in perspective, she's been queen since Harry S Truman was president.
At any rate, her jubilee has been a huge success, save for a few churlish republicans in various corners of Her Majesty's realms from London to Toronto to Sydney pointing out how absurd it is for grown citizens to be fawning over a distant head of state who lives in a fabulous, glittering cocoon entirely disconnected from ordinary life.
Which brings us to President Obama.
Last week, the republic's citizen-president passed among his fellow Americans. Where? Cleveland? Dubuque? Presque Isle, Maine? No, Beverly Hills. These days, it's pretty much always Beverly Hills or Manhattan, because that's where the money is. That's the Green Zone, and you losers are outside it. Appearing at an Obama fundraiser at the home of Glee creator Ryan Murphy and his fiancée David Miller, the president, reasonably enough, had difficulty distinguishing one A-list Hollywood summit from another.
"I just came from a wonderful event over at the Wilshire or the Hilton — I'm not sure which," said Obama, "because you go through the kitchens of all these places and so you never are quite sure where you are."

Well let me just repeat what I said at the site, isn’t the reference to the kitchens of Hollywood hotels in bad taste? I mean RFK was gunned down in one of those kitchens, I suppose Obama is too young and/or stupid to remember that.

Fox, I’m sure that’s true, and I don’t even think Obama was trying to make some “racist” thing out of it (cripes I hope not, after that awful remark he made the other night involving his wife, pushups and er, say what you like about ANY Republican, they won’t be saying stuff like that about their wives!), I think he was just saying, oh you know, you see the kitchens, very unglamorous!
But, my point was that Bobby Kennedy, while being shuffled through the kitchen of some hollywood hotel, for security reasons no doubt, was shot to death. It was such an infamous incident, there were so many awful pictures of him lying, dieing on that hotel kitchen floor.
I don’t think Obama even meant ANYTHING bad by what he said, I’m 100% sure he didn’t mean to diss RFK, I”m just saying he should have 1/2 a brain and know that jokes about presidential candidates and hollywood hotel kitchens are not amusing.
Even to a Kennedy-hating Irish-American dyed-in-the-wool republican like myself.

I did not know Sirhan Sirhaan was a “christian”, if he really was that just means the middle east had been way more messed up than I’ve ever realized.
He's got it down to a science. He doesn't need to tax them, he just needs to ask them.
Maybe he was there (in the kitchen) because they wanted him to get them some coffee.
At one point Christians were a larger minority in Palestine (the area of the British mandate before 1948) than in most other parts of the Middle East, although the percentage has declined as many of them have left the region. I recall hearing that when Arab nationalism started in the 19th century, when the Arab areas of the Middle East were under Ottoman rule, Arab Christians played an important part--they liked the idea of being on an equal level with Arab Muslims. The Ottoman Empire had favored all Muslims but by this time was trying to tell their Christian subjects they were now equal to the Muslims and should all be happy Ottoman citizens (the Christians didn't buy that and wanted to escape from Turkish rule), but the Arab Muslims were becoming more conscious of the difference between themselves and the Turks and wanted an Arab state.
At least one of the radical Palestinian nationalist/terrorist organizations which emerged in the 1960s had a Christian leader (he may still be alive). I can see a Christian like Sirhan becoming a terrorist out of ideology (nationalism)--not all terrorist groups have a religious grievance.
I don't know what kind of Christian Sirhan was originally (there are a number of Christian groups with a long presence in the Holy Land)--according to Wikipedia he changed from one group to another (they mentioned Baptists and Seventh-Day Adventists) but that was probably after coming to the US.
