Pew Research finds that sixty percent of Americans respond negatively to socialism. It is clear why President Barack Obama must avoid that label. Words are important. Political candidates who control the language of political discourse win elections.
Most of our elites would certainly not entertain the question: Is Obama a socialist? Only irresponsible fanatics carelessly throw around such epithets, they say. Polite circles ignore such goofiness.
As someone who has professionally studied and written about comparative economics, capitalism, and socialism for almost fifty years, the reticence to probe the core beliefs of a political leader seems odd. The question is perfectly legitimate in both an academic and political context as long as we define terms and place the discussion in proper context.
By socialist, I do not mean a Lenin, Castro, or Mao, but whether Obama falls within the mainstream of contemporary socialism as represented, for example, by Germanys Social Democrats, French Socialists, or Spains socialist-workers party?
By this criterion, yes, Obama is a socialist.

no, no actually he is a dictatorial Communist
I don’t know what Forbes is doing letting Paul Roderick Gregory spew his crap without rebut... but, it’s not a good thing for the mag.
Maybe a few more years study is in order. Or the realization that your peak analytical years have passed.
Stupid PC tip toeing!
“Just because his policies are socialist doesn’t mean he’s a socialist.” - Bill 0’Reilly
Please... “Socialist” is the polite word for “communist”.
The end game is exactly the same. Why bandy words?
No, he is more like a fascist. He controls the private economy by use of cronyism and select benefits to different groups and businesses.
A Marxist is a "Socialist" who uses force or revolution to reach the 5th and final stage in the "economic evolution" called Communism, or what Karl Marx called "dialectal materialism".
So the question is is Barack Hussein Obama a socialist where revolution is not essential to achieve the ideal?
The answer is an obvious yes. But only because Obama and his fellow travelers have not figured out a way to take the US by force to make it into a Communist state like Mao, Stalin, or Castro did to their countries. To recap, it is 'yes' to both questions that he is definitely a Socialist and a wanna be Communist dictator.
Give that man a cigar. Great read. To bad it’s a horror story.
Strictly speaking, he is a state capitalist, which is to say, a national socialist with Islamic and racial manias..
All we need to do is consider who he associates and obviously wants to emulate: Odinga (Kenya), Zelaya (Honduras), Chavez (Ven.). I'm sure there are others, but these three start showing a pattern of his role models...
What zer0's regime did with Zelaya and Honduras at the beginning of his term was despicable and VERY alarming of where he plans to go...
From Brietbart showing proof of O's membership in the now defunct New Party.
looks like a duck
talks like a duck
acts like a duck
Praise the Lord I can still express an honest opinion of the leader of my nation. I think 50 years from now, writing such a post on a bulletin board will lead to jail time and a complete loss of the few remaining rights. In the meantime, I can call a spade a spade, and I am grateful for the ability to do so.
I also praise God I was not born much later when I would not have had free exercise of my rights. I violently grieve for future generations of oppressed Americans. They won’t know the tenth of the freedom I knew, as I don’t know the half of the freedom they had before the Civil War.
Agreed, he is more like Hitler and Mussulini, than a communist. But socialism, communism and fascism are all under the same premises. All left wing positions.
The question is not: Is Obama a socialist?
The question is WHY is Obama a Socialist?
Florida Anchor Barbara West Responds to Controversial Biden Interview
WEST: You may recognize this famous quote: From each according to his abilities to each according to his needs. Thats from Karl Marx. How is Senator Obama not being a Marxist if he intends to spread the wealth around?
BIDEN: Are you joking? Is this a joke?
BIDEN: Or is that a real question?
WEST: Thats a question.
BIDEN: He is not spreading the wealth around. Hes talking about giving the middle class an opportunity to get back the tax breaks they used to have.
WEST: What do you say to the people who are concerned that Barack Obama will want to turn America into a Socialist country much like Sweden?
BIDEN: I dont know anybody who thinks that, except the far right-wing of the Republican Party.
I’m with you. Obama is a fascist.
“By socialist, I do not mean a Lenin, Castro, or Mao”
The Obama would join that rank if he could.
Two things stop him: armed Americans, and his own wussiness.
... and follower of the FALSE prophet.
No he is a Marxist Communist!
You are correct. He postures as a Leninist, he governs - to abuse that word - as a syndicalist or fascist.
“no, no actually he is a dictatorial Communist”
I think he’s actually a fascist. But it is sort of like debating the number of angels on the head of a pin.
The fact that they are still asking this question is pretty pathetic.
His style of massive government, socialist marxist ties were well known prior to him winning the nomination.
Economic Fascist is the most accurate term.
Let’s add two more words here:
Statist and collectivist. These really accurately define the diseased thinking of Comrade Barry.
Instead of debating ad nauseum what he "IS"- let's all agree on what he "ISN'T" -
Obama "ISN'T" a patriotic American! And he "ISN'T" good for America!
Yep. This is the winning answer
“New Ground” is a publication of the Chicago chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), chicago DSA.
From New Ground 142
May — June, 2012
“Our mission is to establish democratic socialism as a political force in the United States and around the world by training and mobilizing socialist activists to participate in a vibrant and diverse socialist organization at both the local and the national level. DSA both educates the public about democratic socialist values and policies and builds progressive coalitions to win victories that move the U.S. and the world toward social democracy. In the near term, democratic socialists struggle for reforms that shift power and resources away from corporate elites and put them in the hands of ordinary citizens. In the long term, democratic socialists fight for a world in which all people share equally in the governing of the economic, political and cultural institutions and relationships that shape their lives.”

“New Party Update
by Bruce Bentley
“The Chicago New Party is increasely becoming a viable political organization that can make a different in Chicago politics. It is crucial for a political organization to have a solid infrastructure and visible results in its political program. The New Party has continued to solidify this base.
First, in relation to its infrastructure, the NP’s membership has increased since January ‘95 from 225 to 440. National membership has increased from 5700 in December ‘95 to 7000. Currently the NP’s fiscal balance is $7,000 and receives an average of $450/month is sustainer donations.
Secondly, the NP’s ‘96 Political Program has been enormously successful with 3 of 4 endorsed candidates winning electoral primaries. All four candidates attended the NP membership meeting on April 11th to express their gratitude. Danny Davis, winner in the 7th Congressional District, invited NPers to join his Campaign Steering Committee. Patricia Martin, who won the race for Judge in 7th Subcircuit Court, explained that due to the NP she was able to network and get experienced advice from progressives like Davis. Barack Obama, victor in the 13th State Senate District, encouraged NPers to join in his task forces on Voter Education and Voter Registration. The lone loser was Willie Delgado, in the 3rd Illinois House District. Although Delgado received 45% of the vote, he lost by only 800 votes. Delgado commented that it was due to the NP volunteers that he carried the 32nd Ward. Delgado emphasized that he will remain a visible community activist in Humbolt Park. He will conduct four Immigration workshops and encouraged NP activists to get involved.”
I was reading about the Russian revolution the other night. The Bolsheviks used force and the Mensheviks were considered more moderate. When I read about the Mensheviks funny how the name Axelrod kept coming up. Coincidence?
What he is, is a drug-addled sodomite front man.
I recently saw a bumper sticker near San Francisco — for Obama then, for obama now. No hope for some people!
