Gov. Jerry Brown's tax-raising ballot initiative has the support of a slight majority of registered voters, while a competing measure headed to the November ballot has little chance of passing, according to a Field Poll released Saturday. The poll found 52 percent of those surveyed said they would vote in favor of Brown's initiative, 35 percent were opposed and 13 percent were undecided. The measure would raise the income tax for seven years on individuals making $250,000 or more a year and the sales tax for four years.
The money would help fund education, along with a host of other state services. A public vote on tax increases has been the central focus for the governor since he took office last year. If it fails, Brown has proposed billions of dollars in spending cuts, mainly to education.
"He's got a lead. It's tenuous, but it's still a lead," said Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll.
Complicating the governor's efforts, however, is a competing tax measure backed by wealthy civil rights attorney Molly Munger, who so far has put $8.3 million of her own money toward the effort. Brown has raised about $5.7 million from unions, corporations and Indian tribes, along with others.

California has rejected 8 tax increases at the polls in a row, the most recent the $1.00 a pack cigarette tax.

This is why I quit the state. Born, raised and lived my entire life there. But I kept getting hammered by people who said I wasn’t paying “my fair share” (I guess $25K in taxes wasn’t “enough”).
Fine, land of my birth. You wish to punish me for making good decisions in my youth (college degree in business, IT as a avocation) then I walked away.
Good luck replacing my tax income.

Governor Scott Brown of Wisconsin and his resounding victorious survival in the recall election should teach the rest of the nation some very valuable and fiscally strong lessons. On the other hand, in California, we have Jerry Brown. Jerry couldn’t bulldoze his way out of his own idealogy and the mess he’s perpetuated. Now he’s back to try the same old and failed policies of yore. Yep, tax the rich, cut social programs, do nothing about the bloated and unaffordable and looming pension disaster. I can’t wait to get out of this California cess pool the Democrats have created. It’s sickening. Only 5 months and it’s hasta la vista and on to a state free of these idiots.

On occasion I ask libs and others how much of each state tax
dollar funds California education K-12. Mostly I receive replies
from .5 to 10 cents per dollar. Most folks are astonished to learn
that it is actually around 40 cents.
Now Brown wants the people to vote on a new tax bill.
This is the same jerk who had no qualms about defying
the people’s vote when he was state AG. To helll with
him.
If CA citizens wish to vote themselves more Tax increases,
who are we, to stand in their way. The liberal kooks run the
state.
I don’t know about a wall, but I can see an “Exit Tax”
in the future. You drive to the state line in your U-Haul
or moving van, and the state line CA Nazi’s will want $5000
before “Exit Tax Papers” are signed.
However, I agree that citizens who are thinking about leaving,
do it sooner than a costlier later.
CA will collapse with this type of thinking, so we might as well encourage a rapid collapse. That way, the problem will become so obvious that even the liberals will be forced to fix the problem.
Productive citizens will leave the state, but at least their productivity can be realized in other states. Meanwhile, the higher taxes will not lead to increased revenue and the government beast will be starved sooner. This will lead to more lay-offs of public union employees which will eventually dry up union dues and political power. When public sector unions have less power, there might be a chance. Too bad CA couldn’t follow Walker’s lead and strip public unions of collective bargaining privileges.
Hows did that Prop 71 ‘Embryonic Stem Cell’ state funding work out for the all-wise lunatics of Sacto? Beware their costly ambitions on taxpayers..
