A controversial Coney Island principal has pulled the plug on patriotism.
Her refusal to let students sing “God Bless the USA” at their graduation has sparked fireworks at a school filled with proud immigrants.
Greta Hawkins, principal of PS 90, the Edna Cohen School, won’t allow kindergartners to belt out the beloved Lee Greenwood ballad, also known as “Proud to be an American,” at their moving-up ceremony.

“We don’t want to offend other cultures,” they quoted her as explaining.

The DOE reprimanded her in 2010 after teachers complained she called the school “racist” and declared: “I’m black. Your previous principal was white and Jewish. More of us are coming.”
Scaperotti said Hawkins is being targeted by the teachers union and has received hate mail, which is under investigation by the NYPD.

And I do agree that the teachers union needs to go, but generally principals are considered management, so my guess is union rules wouldn't apply to her.

All the more reason the Superintendant should be scared of a lawsuit against them after this story. The parents of the kids and the teachers should file a joint lawsuit seeking damages of having to be exposed to a racist and demeaning nutjob like this black racist principal.
Uhhh, as much as I despise unions, the actual article accuses the union of unfairly attacking the principal (that is the district's excuse for not listening to the complaints... because she is being "targeted" by the local union). How some of you can turn this into an anti-union screed doesn't help conservatives or union-busters at all. It just makes us look like idiots, when we bash the union for doing the right thing here...
I think it is a ruse. Elton John kept it quiet for awhile too. And they seem to dress alike.
The purple is a marketing thing to appeal to his demographic. He has a stylist making these choices. Also, the high profile girlfriend/boyfriend thing is an entertainment staple, even in old Hollywood. It’s good PR for both careers.

I'm going to guess that the criteria for getting into her "in" group involves melanin and ideology.
Haven’t been to Brooklyn in a long time, but I imagine that we underestimate the power and scope of the “proud immigrants”.
Maybe the problem is not this cowardly principal but the people backing her.
She can’t be acting on her own, I don’t think.
The "more of us are coming" also implies that she's in a school with mostly-white faculty, a defect she aims to "fix".
melanin, ideology...those are key, no doubt. But you must also have the proper servile “Yes Ma’am” attitude.
The wife taught in a Panther-Run School like this for a few years. The Principal wasn’t one, but was so scared of these women (and her Job, should she come down on them), that she let them run wild over the staff.
One day, when the leader of this pack of wolves was doing her racist thing, the wife played her American Indiana card. I’m told the stuttering and stammering from these people was a sight to see. They didn’t know how to respond when the tactics they used, were used against them.
The district eventually closed the school, and broke up that crowd, rather than confront them directly.

This is one of the outcomes of electing an affirmative action president. This message has become common from various black constituencies. All that you have to do is show up and you will be annointed. E pluribus unum seems like a long time ago.
City scolds Coney Island principal Greta Hawkins for offending staffers

A Coney Island principal has been disciplined for making remarks that “offended” some staffers at a mandatory school meeting, the Daily News has learned.
Principal Greta Hawkins of Public School 90 made several remarks about “white” and “Jewish” staffers, an investigation by the Department of Education’s Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO) found.
Hawkins, who is black, is a graduate of Mayor Bloomberg’s elite Leadership Academy, which trains new principals.
As punishment, Hawkins is getting a letter of reprimand in her file and will have to attend training with the OEO, officials said.
“Principal Hawkins likely had good intentions, but it’s obvious that she handled this situation poorly and offended some of her staff,” said DOE spokeswoman Margie Feinberg.
Hawkins took the helm of the 80% minority school on W. 12th St. last September.
The school’s three previous principals were white and Jewish. Only three of the school’s 50 teachers are African-American or Hispanic.
Hawkins addressed the issue of race at a June 10 meeting in the school auditorium, and many of her staff didn’t like what she said.
“I’m black. Your previous principal was white and Jewish,” said Hawkins, according to the DOE investigation. “More of us are coming.”
A dozen teachers and two paraprofessionals who were at the meeting filed a complaint about Hawkins’ remarks in June.
They alleged that Hawkins called the school a “racist building,” but the DOE did not substantiate that claim.
Teachers are split on whether Hawkins’ punishment is appropriate.
“If I said those things, I’d be fired,” said a teacher who wouldn’t give her name because she fears retribution. “The principal should be removed. She divided the staff, and she’s ruining the school.”
Parents are concerned that the controversy is interfering with their children’s education.
“I’m hopeful that this whole incident will go away and we’ll grow from it,” said Imah Ponce, of Coney Island, who has a daughter in sixth grade in the school. “The principal may have chosen the wrong words, but I don’t think she’s racist.”
Hawkins didn’t return calls for comment
So the Hate America First crowd is now “another culture”?
