'I don't know how we got so lucky!' Somali family on benefits handed keys to £2million luxury
the Daily Mail ^ | 7 June 2012 | Arthur Martin

A family of Somali benefits claimants living in a £2million home courtesy of the taxpayer admitted they couldn’t believe their luck yesterday.

To the anger of neighbours, the family of ten are allowed to live in a six-bedroom end-of-terrace Georgian townhouse in one of London’s most fashionable areas, populated by high-flying lawyers and stockbrokers. The family use housing benefits to pay a heavily discounted rent for the four-storey house in Islington – close to Tony Blair’s former home – which boasts a variety of period features, including chandeliers and wood flooring.

The family are understood to pay the council just over £1,000 a month in rent, yet if the property were rented on the private market it could command up to £6,000 a month.

As the house is owned by the council, which has set an artificially low rent, the case is not covered by the Coalition’s benefit reforms, which are designed to stop large families claiming huge sums in benefits to live in mansions far beyond the reach of most hard-working taxpayers.

Yesterday two men from the Somali family were seen leaving the house and driving away in a new black Vauxhall car.

I don’t know what kind of shape the house was in when rented, but I am sure the owners will love it when they move out.

Can you say : Trashed?

Suicide of western civilization.

I would say that future historians will marvel at these kinds of details, but the coming collapse is going to be so thorough and devastating, that future historians (if any) will be barely able to piece together the larger picture of what happened.

As the house is owned by the council ...

"The people" own the house. No doubt the people are delighted to provide this haute-bourgeois residence to some of their more downtrodden representatives, rather than its being occupied by capitalist running dogs.

How I wish some rich guy would rent a house in Chicago next door to obama. And next door to Barbara Streisand and Oprah. And don’t forget Pelosi and Reid.

"The council" is responsible for the upkeep. If one believes Theodore Dalrymple (which I do, in spite of that's not being his real name), the tenants will not even pick up trash from the stoop, or whatever Brits call the front-steps area, nor unplug their own toilets or kitchen drains.

"...the tenants will not even pick up trash from the stoop..."

Today I drove by two brand new lovely homes built by Habitat for Humanity. One has a trampoline IN THE FRONT YARD and a barbecue grill on the porch. Both homes have garbage and crap-loads of kids toys strewn all over. Neither lawn is mown. It made me very angry to think these folks got brand new homes. I remember seeing tons of volunteers building the houses. You can't give people things. If they don't earn it, they have no appreciation for its value.

Aren’t Habitat for Humanity recipients supposed to put in a lot of physical labor i.e. sweat equity, into building the place before they can get a HFH home?

Seriously? Hell, I should move there with my blue sport coat and enjoy afternoons sipping tea and eating cucumber sandwiches at The Savoy....

I don’t think you get “benefits” unless you’re basically unfit for civilized life, so you must be tattooed and pierced and drinking beer on the street corner, not neatly dressed taking tea at the Savoy.

(Is that you, Higgins?)

The house is owned “by the council” whatever squalid bureaucracy that refers to, but what it means in reality is those chandeliers are goners. So is the nice hardwood floor.

A society that rewards the slackers like this and punish’s the middle class workers with high taxes and high prices isn’t going to last.
