Unionized cafeteria workers in one western Pennsylvania school district have won the right to eat expired food for free - at their own risk.
The Herald of Sharon, Pa., reports Monday (http://bit.ly/LDdM6d ) that the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees filed a grievance against the Sharpsville Area School District last year after school officials "violated established past practice" by no longer allowing workers to eat the expired food for free.

Under the agreement, food items that are past their expiration date or reheated in a way that they can no longer be served to students may still be eaten for free by the cafeteria workers.
Workers must pay for unexpired food they eat.

What a scam...
I can still remember in high school watching the loading docks behind the cafeteria on certain days. You could tell when a big food delivery had come in. Big flats of eggs, boxes of port chops, whole chickens, canned foods.... all went floating right out the back door into back seats and trunks.
Gee, I guess all that stuff was “expired”...

Over buy, so food goes past the expiry date, and voila! my personal grocery bill goes WAAAAAAY down.
I would love to see the before and after food bills for the school.
Just more ways to kill people.
If they get sick from it. they will still sue.
Anyway, if they are going to use the food, what about soup kitchens and shelters?
Make them eat it on the spot. That will eliminate some fraud but not all —
This is one of my pet peeves. If there is a widespread power outage in PA, as I understand it, grocery stores without generators are obliged to dump all perishable food, rather than hand what is still safe to eat (still mostly frozen) it over to emergency services to feed folks who have gone to emergency shelters because they have no power!
This is true even in the winter when it can be below freezing outdoors. Insane.
I remember when I was a young one about 9 or 10, the electric went out at a grocery store in a small town in North Western, PA for a day or so (cant remember the circumstances) but my dad and the neighbor went there and bought home truck loads of ice cream, fudge sickles and gallon containers of all kinds.
What we couldn’t save we fed to the pigs we were raising and all I can say is the 4 of us siblings had one of the best summers I can remember. We didn’t just go and get (a) fudge sickle we got a box full!
The local grocery here places expired dated food on sale at about half price. I buy all I can get. Haven’t gotten sick yet, don’t expect to.
Foods such as vacuum packed bacon are good well beyond the expiration date,Look in refrigerators around the nation and you will find expired dated salad dressing in almost every home.
Nothing says you care like expired food.
