One of two female fighter pilots will become the first Chinese woman in space later this month, after the two were shortlisted for a place in the three-person team that will blast off in the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft, the state news agency Xinhua said.
Chinese media described Major Liu Yang, from Henan, as a "hero pilot" who achieved a successful emergency landing after a dramatic birdstrike incident spattered the windshield of her plane with blood.
Meanwhile, her rival, Captain Wang Yaping, from Shandong, is said to have flown rescue missions during the Sichuan earthquake and piloted a cloud-seeding plane to help clear the skies of rain for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Send them to my house for a complete debriefing!
We can thank William Jefferson Clinton for handing over valuable technology that took years of expensive research on a silver platter. Before the Clinton years most Chinese used bicycles as the primary means of transportation. A few short years later they’re going into space.
No way they could have done it without a “little help from their friends” in Washington.
Someone who gets this post.
The Chinese are going to launch three astronauts this month. To a platform that is already in orbit.
In the mean time we have no manned space program
And look how much ridicule Newt got, even here on FR, when he suggested going back to the moon.
Really? It’s first woman? She must be really really old.
Why do we need a manned program right at this moment?
Space X proved it can deliver supplies to the ISS, and will be manned in the not so distant future.
The Chinese must have run low on bullets.
Old Chinese saying: Woman who fly plane upside down have crack up.
Bata bing, bata boom!
Nothing like having a Yang and a Wang together in a space capsule. Soon it will be Wang, Yang and a little Tang.
Not Guilty, Guilty!
I don’t know. They both look like Yoko’s better looking brother to me.
Sorry...I have to vote guilty on both. Nothing but soulless drones behind those empty eyes.
Have you ever been stuck behind an Asian woman driver? That rocket will never reach orbit.
Confucius say, photographer's talent should not decide who gets cowgirl position!
Captain Wang Yaping
Better photo of the first woman...she’s pretty
Your honor...you’re making it difficult...
Aw heck...even a commie can be a babe...
It’ll be another fake but real underwater filming
Second woman pictured...
Hope they fly better than they drive.
Declining and grounded America sends its regards to the astronauts and wishes them safe travels.
So, in other words, they’re going to send her into a swimming pool?
For some reason I missed that deceptive part of history.. Freakin’ hilarious. The reflection of the stadium lights did it for me. The jury is still out on the flag movement but it’s definitely questionable. It wouldn’t move at all in space would it, but I suppose it would move like that in water..? Anyway, thanks for linking to that vid.. Hahaha! Perhaps their latest ‘stealth fighter/bomber’ is all a facade too!
I’m thinking they shot up a unmanned “manned” capsule as a test before committing to a real launch. Space flight is tremendously difficult.
