Cops deflate parachuters' plans for tower leap

Two New Hampshire men determined to make parachute jumps off a Newton communications tower hundreds of feet high were nabbed by cops before they could take the dangerous plunge over the weekend.

Tighe Crumb, 31, of Salem, N.H., and Thomas Becker, 28, of Derry, N.H., were charged with trespassing, disturbing the peace and wanton destruction of property after police spotted them climbing up the tower at about 9:15 p.m. on Sunday, police said. Both men had parachutes and helmets on. Crumb also had a video camera on his helmet, police said.

Reached at home yesterday, Crumb acknowledged the pair were planning to jump, but said, “I can’t talk about it.” “It would have been a BASE jump,” Crumb said. Becker could not be reached for comment.

BASE jumping — short for Buildings, Antennas, Spans and Earth — is the daredevil sport of parachuting off fixed positions such as towers, bridges and cliffs

The two pleaded not guilty yesterday and were released on orders to stay away from the tower, a spokeswoman for the Middlesex District Attorney said. They are due back in court July 2.

The tower is about 1165 ft tall. A couple hundred feet less than the roof of tower 1 of the WTC. I thought of the folks in the tower who had to jump out to avoid the fire, or were blown out. They didn't have the option of parachutes...

a post on radio-info.com by reelyreel: “The last time I remember an incident like this was November 2009 in Farmington, CT... Someone climbed the 1,340 foot WTIC-TV/WEDH/WCCT/WRCH tower around 5 am and parachuted from the top. He was never caught. Wreckless, dangerous, stupid. That’s a hell of a lot of RF as you’re climbing that tower for well over an hour, cause you’re obviously not using the elevator.”

They didn't have the option of parachutes...

Maybe that option should be made available. All skyscrapers of a certain height should be required to stock parachutes in the upper floor closets for just such emergencies.

You've got to be kidding.

I've got to build closets for 100, 200 parachutes on every floor?

Do you think everybody already knows how to put on a parachute?

Or when and where to pull the cord?

I'm not a jumper, but it seems to me that jumping out of the 95th floor is a good way to splat into a 63rd floor window if the wind is right.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, but that's extreme.

Maybe the lawyers lined up at the bottom will catch your carcass.

I like the idea. They would come up with a chute you put on like a jacket. Likely one stored under each desk. Put and accelerometer on the opening device and all they would have to do is put it on and jump.

Sure some would die a lot fewer than without a chute.

Why don’t you suggest that to Bloomie? NO, never mind, he might just go for it. More nanny-statism? If you want a chute, bring your own.

I hope they had fun doing ‘wanton’; sounds like they’re going to pay for it, though.
