ND vote lets school scrap Fighting Sioux nickname

North Dakota voters overwhelmingly decided Tuesday to let the state's flagship university dump a controversial Fighting Sioux nickname that sparked threats of NCAA sanctions, ending — at least temporarily — a dispute simmering for decades that divided sports fans, alumni and even tribes.

The matter boiled over seven years ago when the University of North Dakota was placed on a list of schools with American Indian nicknames that the NCAA deemed hostile and abusive. Those colleges were told to dump the names or risk penalties against their athletic teams.

Voters in Tuesday's North Dakota primary were being asked whether to uphold or reject the Legislature's repeal of a state law requiring the school to use the nickname and American Indian head logo. The vote sends the matter back to the state's Board of Higher Education, which is expected to retire the moniker and logo.

KEYWORDS:
On one hand, having a state law mandating a university's nickname seems a bit idiotic.

On the other hand, I grow ever-sicker of the NCAA's involvement in social engineering experiments.

So what’s the problem? Are the Sioux inherently pansies?

Makes sense to me. I think only white tribes, like the Vikings and Trojans are strong enough for sports nicknames. /s

I propose every American Indian-derived name used anywhere in the US be changed...

Every US Army helicopter type carries a US tribe name. How long before the Pentagon gets it in their head that they are ‘disrespecting’ tribal Americans and renames everything? Oh? It’s all about money in collegiate sports?! Silly me!

I suggest the name to be changed to “The fighting guys that go woo-woo-woo”

Not to mention that the software that runs most web servers is named Apache.

I propose they be called the Tolerant Inclusives. Their jerseys could be designed to look like they were all wearing sweater vests.

At least 1 of the Lakota tribes supported the use of the the Sioux name by UND. Didn’t seem to matter to the nannies at the NCAA.

Using "Fighting" is problematic also in today's environment. Perhaps they could go to the following \:

University of North Dakota Prancing Unicorns
University of North Dakota Mighty Geldings
University of North Dakota Curious Fawns
@OWS University of North Dakota Sports Solidarity Consortium

I've never understood the Left's opposition to Indian names. These names were chosen out of respect for Indians.

On the other hand, when Imperial Valley College wanted to change its mascot from the Arabs to the Desert Raiders following the terrorist attacks of 2001, liberals got upset and cried "racism!" and "intolerance!" IVC's teams are still the Arabs.

"I propose every American Indian-derived name used anywhere in the US be changed..."

As a Minnesotan, who grew up in Bemidji, along the Mississippi river, I would be quite homeless. I wonder if that would qualify me to get a check from Obama?

If this institution was engaged in a disrespectful display at the expense of Indian culture and heritage, perhaps it should be examined; But there is no evidence presented that that is the case. The whole PC sterilization movement peaked years ago, just prior to the Seminole Tribe of Florida fighting to keep their association with FSU. While, again, FSU did not disrespect the tribe prior to the controversy, efforts to shore-up the procedures with tribal involvement increased. I think that even though it was not bad, it improved.

On the other hand, if it is determined by a governmental body that no Indian references are kosher, we need to start wiping off all these Indian State names like Mississippi and Illinois - we can replace them with unoffensive names like “Political District #21”, #12, and so on. Also, if town names are offensive we should replace them with terms like “State Farm #6”. that way we can all be happy (or else!) Then we can field sports collectives like “State #14 University, fighting hammers” Gooooo Hammers!

When my alma mater, Qunnipiac College now University, gave up using “Braves”, I suggested that they should become the QC PC’s (Politically Corrects)

It took years, but they finally stopped calling me for donations because I would pleasantly explain to the caller that I couldn’t understand how a term like “brave” was insulting. And Minnesota got to use the terms Vikings which were my ancestors and if Native american team names can’t be use, then Viking shouldn’t be allowed to be used either. What’s good for one is good for all and until that happened, I couldn’t make a donation

Our town high school are the Indians. My friends and I joke that when the come ofter that name, we should just switch the mascot from a native american to a Sikh - go from a guy with a headdress to a guy with a turban

“I propose every American Indian-derived name used anywhere in the US be changed...”

And then there will be a congressional bill that says the Washington Redskins are exempt. And Obama will hail it as a great day in sports. And the media will go.

Hmmmm Hmmmmm Hmmmmm

Based on this reasoning, there are many nicknames besides Indian nicknames which are offensive.

Boston Celtics is offensive to the Celtic people.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish is offensive to the Irish.
San Diego Padres is offensive to priests and clergy.
New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Angels are offensive to religion and religious people.
Minnesota Vikings is offensive to Scandanavians.
Pittsburgh Pirates is offensive to real pirates.
Pittsburgh Steelers is offensive to real steel workers.
Milwaukee Brewers is offensive to real brewery workers.
Green Bay Packers is offensive to real meat packers.
Texas Rangers is offensive to the law enforcement agency.
Buffalo Bills is offensive to the memory of Buffalo Bill Cody.
Dallas Cowboys is offensive to real cowboys.

And all of the animal nicknames are offensive to the animals. The PETA crowd can get involved with all of those and express mock outrage.

What about the Cleveland Browns? Is that racist? Is the San Francisco or New York Giants insensitive toward little people? What about the Jersey Devils? Offensive to Christians?
Does Saints and Angels offend atheists? Where does this pc nonsense end?

That’s it, the PC nonsense never ends. Yes, the Cleveland Browns must be racist!

We live in a politically correct world. The forces of political correctness, in so many areas of life, are dictating what is allowed and what is not allowed.

Several years ago, the Montgomery County, Maryland school district changed the name of the Poolesville High School mascot from the Indians to the Falcons. The students and community voted overwhelmingly to keep the nickname, and the 3 American Indians in the school district wanted to keep it. Of course, political correctness won, and the name was changed at great expense to taxpayers.

Definitely racist.

Team was named after coach Paul Brown.

Who was a white guy.
