Welcome Mayor Bloomberg(or his spokesperson). I guess I should click my heels and say "heil".

I am the antitheses of Mayor Bloomberg. As I stated in my post, "I am against the Bloomberg food Nazis and their desire to mico-manage our lives. People have the right to make their own stupid choices and suffer the consequences as long as their stupid decisions don't have a material effect upon other people." What part of this don't you understand?

People have the right to make their own stupid choices and suffer the consequences as long as their stupid decisions don't have a material effect upon other people.

So who gets to decide when a material effect upon others occurs?
Bloomberg think his right to interfere is NOW.
Your mileage may vary but you seem to be going down the same road.

“Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to outlaw sugary drinks over 16 ounces (1 pint) in the city’s restaurants, delis, food trucks, movie theatres and sporting arenas. “

Great, You’ll get a thimble full of soda because 3/4 of the damned thing is ice cubes anyway.

Obesity materially impacts my life when I pay $500 for an airline seat only to have to share a third of my seat with the fat person sitting next to me. Unlike Bloomberg, I don’t want govenment to regulate the food a person can eat so that I can use the entire airline seat that I paid for. Rather, I want government to leave the airlines alone so that the airline can charge fat people more for occupying greaster space without fear of a lawsuit or yet another costly regulation (i.e., requiring airlines to provide larger seats).

Obesity materially impacts my life when my employees don’t show up for work because of obesity related illnesses. Unlike Bloomberg, I don’t want govenment to regulate the food a person can eat so that I can get better productivity out of my employees. Rather, I want government to leave me alone so that I have the freedom to hire and fire who I want without fear of being sued for discrimination under the American’s with Disability Act or the Civil Rights Act. (Although the Civil Rights Act does not directly prohibit discrimination based upon obesity, a herd of fat black women recently claimed that their fatness is part of the black culture.)

Obesity materially impacts my life when a significant part of the the premiums that I pay for health insurance are for the cost of obesity related illnesses and health care. Unlike Bloomberg, I don’t want govenment to regulate the food a person can eat so that my health insurance premiums go down. Rather, I want government to leave health insurers and their customers alone so that people with healthy lifestyles can buy health insurance that is priced to reflect their specific risk. (By the same argument, I shouldn’t have to buy a health insurance policy that covers AIDS, maternity, sickle cell, drug rehab, and psychobabble counseling, when the chances of me needing this type of insurance is slim to none, yet the government makes me pay for the unhealthy lifestyle of others by requiring insurers to cover these types of claims regardless of the insureds’ risk, the cost of which is passed on to people who live low risk lifestyles.)

That's because you aren't taxed high enough. Work harder! Millions of welfare recipients are depending on you. < / sarcasm >

Parents need to educate their children about healthy eating; some will some won’t just like every other thing parents need to teach their children. It is not the government’s job, and they would make it worse if they tried. Expecting the government to solve issues that should be individual responsibility is what got us in the mess we are in.

I am not too worried about all the fat people, I think times are going to get hard enough to solve that issue.

With all the issues we are facing as a country; people being fat should not be a priority.

I understand what you are saying and in theory, I agree 100%. But fat parents tend to produce fat kids, not because of genetics, but because of bad eating and bad nutrition. Expecting a fat parent to teach their fat kids about nutrition, healthy food choices, serving sizes, etc., is like asking alcoholics to teach their kids about the dangers of drinking, slut mothers to teach their daughters about the virtues of abstention, and lazy fathers to teach their kids about the upside of hard work.

Life imitates art, in this case Mr. Bloomberg apparently watched Demolition Man too many times and is now channeling Dr. Cocteau.

Re: real butter and salt
Nope salt has been taken off the hook, all those “scare people stoopid” experts have been proven wrong and real butter is much better for you than all those chemicals in imitation foods.

Every instance you cite I agree with BUT we all know the government has set parameters that you can’t distinguish differences in others anymore, only the government is allowed to do that. You (including businesses) only have a right to be regulated - you can’t regulate yourself - that’s their job now...they’ve created the never ending spiral of regulation.(It pays the mortgage)

If you agree for a split-second that they have a right to alter the container size of soda....it falls into their regulation trap. (9 out of 10 dentists agree....;)

You are correct on both accounts, but moderation is necessary.

The Mrs. and I both have high blood pressure, but we control it with salt substitutes such as pepper. Even natural sea salt in moderation will give you more flavor for less quantity.

We've also given up margarine and butter substitutes and gone back to real butter. Tastes waaaaaaaay better but, again, moderation is the key.

My point was not to argue the nutritional value of butter vs. margarine or salt vs. flavoring substitutes. It was to point out the abject idiocy of the food Nazis in going after snacks which are naturally good for you or only mildly bad (at worst) while leaving far more egregious health hazards alone. For example: gay sex.

You are right, but do you want the government in charge of all those things??? Really??? I don’t. I don’t think the government will do any better job than the sorry parents.

If a child is being truly neglected or abused someone must step in, government agencies do that now and look what a messed up system that has turned out to be. That is a necessary evil, darned if we do, darned if we don’t. Do we really want government agencies making decisions about what we can and cannot eat or drink? Do you think the government could not find fault with something you think is ok to eat or drink? It would just lead to more and more government control and craziness.

Has is occurred to you that if soda or popcorn or what have you comes only in small sizes those that want more will buy more small items instead of one large one? What will that solve?

What about the business point of view- if you are in the business of selling food or drink would you want the government deciding what you can or cannot sell and what size container?

Where does it end?

How does all this fit in with the fact that we are rapidly losing our freedoms, our economy is in the tank- not to mention the threat of terrorism. I think we should worry about these issues before we worry about how much soda or popcorn a fat person should be allowed.

These bans make oh-so much sense in a time when the gay mafia expends so much time, money and political capital coercing its viewpoint that it's normal and good to jam one's private parts into another's sewer system. (/s)

It's nothing more subtle than naked (!) political advantage skewing our moral worldview and common sense.

Yet New York has the largest needle-exchange program in the world.

Heroin use is still ok.
