Today, the Michigan House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to repeal the state handgun permit-to-purchase and registration requirements. House Bill 5225 passed in the state House by a 74 to 36 vote. HB 5225 would repeal the bureaucratic state permit-to-purchase handguns and instead utilize the FBIs National Instant Criminal Background Check System. House Bill 5498 and House Bill 5499 also passed in the state House along with HB 5225. These three bills now go to the state Senate where they will be assigned to the appropriate committees.
HB 5225, sponsored by state Representative Paul Opsommer (R-93), which became obsolete when the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) took effect in 1998. Under the current state process, gun buyers must apply with their local law enforcement agency and pass a written test before being authorized to buy a handgun. This permit is valid for only one gun and it expires after ten days. Since 1998, federal law has required a national criminal records check for the purchase of any firearm, from any gun dealer, in every state.
Some of the key points of HB 5225 as amended are:
* Repeal the state requirement to seek police permission to purchase a firearm by traveling to a local police station and obtaining a permit to purchase.
* Repeal the requirement to register a completely legally purchased and owned firearm by a law-abiding citizen to be registered with the government through the police.
* Adopt the use of the federally-funded National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
* Default to the federal standard of prohibited persons and each purchase would still require a background check.
* Cut Michigans costs by using the federally-administered national instant background check system and eliminate wasted man-hours of tracking lawful gun owners in Michigan.
The NRA has been working diligently to repeal this antiquated, costly and unnecessary obstacle for gun owners and has coordinated with several state Representatives to produce the new language for HB 5225. HB 5498, sponsored by state Representative Richard LeBlanc (D-18), provides for the legal penalties relating to firearms and other weapons. HB 5499, sponsored by state Representative Ray Franz (R-101), clarifies the regulations regarding the sale of firearms to prohibited persons and makes them consistent with federal standards. I might be a bit unfair as I am guessing to what is in his heart and what I think he truly is deep down inside. So far, he has been a very good governor. I just have read up on his stances prior to being elected. It gives me hope for Romney
Yes, a FRstalker -
My Dad loved boats - during WW2, he shipped out to the Philippines (he was in the Army), and he was one of the few not heaving in the huge swells - his family all sailed on the Great Lakes back in the day. I am such a weanie.
So, fix that boat or else....
We have a Republican state House and Senate now, and (barring the Zombie Apocalypse) will elect a Republican governor in November. I expect the law to change in fairly short order.
We’ll have a reason to go to Marshville at some point, and then I’ll stop in and get the limit (I think it’s five) of permits in one stop.
It will get fixed. Old Chris-Craft - older than my wife, in fact. Heh.
Just needs paint and a tune-up.
I am writing a book about that apocolypse...hmm, ought to get back to it. But first, g’night, ladies.
Good for you! I can be pretty jumpy too but one thing that has helped me over the years is breathing - focused, calm, breathing, and firing at the bottom of the exhale. I learned this in an Appleseed marksmanship training a few years ago but it was very similar to the yoga I’d done for years before that; something you can practice any time.
Also, if you haven’t already, you might try shooting rifles. For me it’s easier not to have that jumpy anticipation. I recommend starting with a .22 but you might also enjoy an AR-15.
It is because of such as this that Obama will lose Michigan. This is a slap in the Left’s face.
I had to sell all mine in order to feed the family.
You will get no argument here!!!! The NRA is just so proud of themselves agreeing that everyone should just bow to the federally funded NICS. When they should be against any and all gun law including the NFA as a beginning and ending with the last bit of “shall not be infringed” and the bureaucracies that could end with the repeals. I have been disgusted with the NRA for years. Especially with their seeming delight in identifying democrats who are pro second amendment.
“Ill stop in and get the limit”
Speaking of limits, I know it’s a bit late, but congratulations on the new addition.
...the limit part is sarc. I am grateful there are those who impose no limit on legacy, or the Biblical, “Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth”...
Where’s the like button to that statement...bump!
Gonna have to borrow it too. Do you mind?
The lookout saw the vessel pass,
She had the lines of a twenty one hundred class,
He'd seen one once in a history book,
He shivered twice and then he shook,
And phoned the bridge. "A vessel, Sir",
A ghost ship by the looks of her,
The skipper paled and then he said,
"It's the damned Brown...full speed ahead
If she catches you, she'll pass the curse
And then forever, for ill or worse,
We'll sail the oceans far and wide,
Through storm and gale and raging tide."
Dropping astern the ghost ship sent
A message and this is how it went,
"Do you have for us any mail
Or orders saying how long we'll sail?"
The only answer the ship could give
To the poor old brown was "Negative."
The Captain said. "She sailed the seas
In arctic cold and tropic breeze,
From Tokyo harbor to Hong Kong isle.
She's sailed a hundred million miles
from Subic Bay to Korean shores,
She's sailed a hundred years or more."
It happened back in Forty-Six,
Old Five Forty Six, got in such a fix.
No one can say just what occurred
Scuttle butt is all i've heard.
Nobody knows if witches brew
Put this curse on the old Brown's crew,
Or if someone in DesPac
Forgot to send her back
They’ve done Great work here in Florida over the years. I agree they do some strange things sometimes.
I did that for my daughters.
They are 12 and 14.
Shooting lessons and gun safety class.
Along with the “Stopping assault” from Krav Maga, they are sweet but deadly.
There’s a natural limit - one of these days, we just won’t have any more ;-).
And thank you - Kathleen is a wonderful fat pink pet!
Michigan leads the way: in the 1960s with riots and white flight, in the 1980s with unemployment and industrial flight, and now in the 2010s, with stupid liberal law rollbacks.
Thanks - I had trouble cocking a revolver because of my carpal tunnel issues, but will try that at the range with a rental.
