Nixon Emerges a Victor in ‘War on History’ Waged in the Wake of Watergate
New York Sun ^ | June 14, 2012 | By CONRAD BLACK

Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein (Woodstein for our purposes) now claim, in a Washington Post piece, that President Nixon was “far worse than we thought,” and accuse him of conducting five “wars”: against the anti-war movement, on the media, against the Democrats, on justice, and on history. In evaluating such a volcanic farrago of pent-up charges, the facts must be arrayed in three tiers: the facts of Woodstein’s activities and revelations; the facts of the Watergate case and related controversies; and the importance of Watergate in an appreciation of the Nixon record.

From what I have heard and read Nixon was a hard guy to get to know and like. Alot of stuff about him is coming to light. Maybe he was not so bad after all.

Many FReepers will be aghast at the news that Bob Woodward is a poster and a lurker here at Free Republic. To contact him, or demonstrate his presence one must merely post on the subject of Watergate. That's how I shared internet PM messages with this Liberal Wallflower.

BTW, Hi Bob, you tool!

The media was very hard on Nixon. IMO it is because he absolutely blasted McGovern out of the saddle in the 1972 elections. Also, Nixon wanted to militarily win the war in Vietnam.

Then, as now, the media was the propaganda arm of the DNC. The libs did everything they could to destroy him. As they rewrite history he has become their political antichrist and no one challenges the image anymore.

Watergate was essentially a media coup against Nixon. Much worse has been done by Democrats and overlooked.

One need only look at the current Fast and Furious scandal to appreciate that.

From the accounts I heard, he was well-liked by the sailors under his command during World War II. (The same can be said for his 1960 opponent, JFK.) He did his job as an officer efficiently, without being a jerk, and was apparently genuinely concerned about the welfare and morale of his sailors.

I think Nixon was absolutely wrong about a lot of things (something of a Keyesian). Nonetheless, he right about a lot, and was an effective executive. He was probably no more corrupt and ruthless than JFK or LBJ, he just never had the press behind him.

The left also never got over Nixon’s nailing of Alger Hiss during the HUAC days. It became a religious tenet to them to despise and punish Nixon for this(perhaps more for that than for Watergate or Vietnam) despite his being relatively liberal for a Republican.

Nixon’s greatest crime was beating McGovern in a nationwide landslide. No one that anyone in the MSM knew voted for Nixon. Nixon had to be punished.

Good point but the real reason the ‘media’ was so hard on Nixon was his anti-communist actions in the 1950’s. They showed their true colors by coming after him using the Watergate ‘scandal’ in the ‘70s. Nixon gained his first term in the House by beating a woman named Helen Gahagan Douglas, who Nixon described as the ‘pink lady’...not really a red, mind you, just pink, almost a red...the ‘media’ never forgave him.
This is not to say Watergate wasn’t a serious matter, but look at what some of these other tools (Kennedy, Johnson, Clinton, Obama) have gotten away with, with hardly a peep out of the ‘media’...just follow the dots.

Nixon did defeat Helen Gahagan Douglas but that was in the U.S. Senate race for California in 1950.

The “real” reasons for Watergate (and the self-congratulation of Mr. Woodward, who, like his “newspaper” is in decline) are as follows: 1) Carl Bernstein acknowleged in his memoirs that both his parents were secret members of the US Communist Party and he was a red-diaper baby; obviously he hated Richard Nixon and oculd care less about the millions of dead in South Vietnam — he will face a much greater Judge some day than Richard Nixon ever did; 2) Mark Felt was a bitter old man passed over for promotion to FBI director who “got back” at Nixon and Patrick Grey to the delight of the press and whose idiotic family demanded money for his backstabbing; 3) Woodward and Bernstein have little else, so they have to magnify their supposed “accomplishment”; 4) if you have ever talked to a liberal goofball (several are my neighbors) they will regale you with stories abour Nixon’s purported “crimes” but be unable to tell you WHAT they were — on the other hand, they never say a word about a law professor running for the Senate who lied about being an “Indian” and got affirmative action benefits or the simpleton John Edwards, among many others.

Lot more good in Nixon than either his opponent, McGovern, or. the current non-entity occupying the WH.

Above and beyond putting the wretch Blackmun on the SCOTUS, Nixon made legalization of abortion a “national security” priority of his administration. Conservatives used to object to things like this.

Black Dynamite is a 2009 American blaxploitation spoof/homage action and comedy film starring Michael Jai White, Salli Richardson, Arsenio Hall, Kevin Chapman and Tommy Davidson. It is a spoof of 1970s blaxploitation films. There is a scene where BD goes after Nixon. Funny as hell...I thought.

Yeah and IKE put Warren on the court. Who would Humphery or McGovern put in there? With Nixon as far as the court went it was a wash.
