Exclusive: Arrested spy compromised China's U.S. espionage network: sources

(Reuters) - A Chinese state-security official arrested this year on allegations of spying for Washington is suspected to have compromised some of China's U.S. agents in a major setback that angered President Hu Jintao, sources said.

Hu personally intervened this year, ordering an investigation into the case after the Ministry of State Security arrested one of its own officials for passing information to the Americans, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.

The official, an aide to a vice minister, was taken into custody sometime between January and March after the ministry became alarmed last year over repeated incidents of Chinese agents being compromised in the United States, they said.

I guess it would be difficult to get Chicom campaign donations in current election cycle. They would be laying low for a while.

I notice that quite a few VIP's have second marriage with Chinese women. I can't rule out that possibility that many of them are also working as informants to Chinese intelligence.

A bit unfortunate we couldn’t extract our guy out of the country before he got arrested - usually makes it easier to recruit future agents if you do.

“...Arrested spy compromised China’s U.S. espionage network:...”

Would it be beyond the imagination that our own manchurian candidate might have possibly exposed this guy to his Chicom buddies as a way of getting some $$$$ for his re-election?

Remember Jimmy Carter sending an envoy (Ted Kennedy?) to the Soviets during the 1980 elections to plead with them to use whatever they had with groups over here to prevent Reagan from winning...? (Fact check/clarification, anyone?)

Just a thought....

Bingo. It's not just ViPs. I saw a network guy busted on account of his wife when I worked for DoD. The woman in question was definitely established to be on a foreign payroll (not Chinese, but same deal) and information was flowing to a known enemy of the USA. So one day he got a police escort to the gate.

I agree with you about Holder but not Biden. Joe may be a “goof” but he doesn’t hate America.

I still kick myself sometimes for not realizing that the large amount of paper that the copier across from my desk was going through was a sign of espionage. Make sure that both your classified and unclassified printers and copiers are audited, everyone.

It seems to me as if every fifth risk manager in the financial world is a Chinese immigrant, and I imagine that’s a prime position for financial system/corporate espionage.

So is this another Obama administration leak designed to boost the image of the boss (and divert attention from Chinese complicity)?

Actually, if one wishes for the inhibition of China's economic power, one would hope they are stealing trading ideas from our top financial firms. :)

And if they want to topple the system, how better than to know where the risk lies?

OMG, could I tell stories about copies and blueprints. It basically comes down to this:

Print only that which you absolutely need hardcopy of.
Intercept the hardcopy immediately upon creation.
Store all hardcopy securely, and store only that which you absolutely need to store.
Securely dispose of all hardcopy the instant you don't need it anymore. (Managers, do this personally. NEVER delegate document security. We had a massive breach because a Director let his assistant clean out his files. She was an eco-nut and put them in an open recycle bin in an unsecured area, from which most of them promptly vanished.)

Thanks, Eric. I remember the incident, but not the exact details of who sent who.

Either way, think of the ramifications...a member of the US Senate, openly soliciting an Enemy of the US to meddle in our elections.

Why isn’t that treason?

It was Kennedy who sent former Cal Sen Tunney to Russia
