We already know the rebels have a serious Sunni Islamist bent to the point where al-Qaeda’s al-Nusrah Front is carrying out some of the most sophisticated attacks using suicide bombers. On the other hand we are already passively aiding the shipment of weapons from the Gulf Arab states, mainly Saudi Arabia, to the rebels.

(Telegraph) — Syrian rebels have held meetings with senior US government officials in Washington as pressure mounts on the US to authorise a shipment of heavy weapons, including surface-to-air missiles to combat the Assad regime, the Daily Telegraph has learned.

A senior Free Syrian Army representative met in the past week at the US State Department with the US ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford and Frederick Hoff, special coordinator for the Middle East, sources have confirmed.

The rebel emissaries, armed with an iPad showing detailed plans on Google Earth identifying rebel positions and regime targets, have also met with senior members of the National Security Council, which advises President Obama on national security policy.

This is not the place where we need to face off with Putin & Russia. Look how well our intervention turned out in Libya and Egypt.

Thanks for giving the full title. For a minute I thought they were sending Michelle over there.

including surface-to-air missiles to combat the...

When a thug regime cannot directly attack Israel, it finds indirect means to accomplish the same thing.

Is this in America’s best interests?

Or is Hussein all-in for the Moslem Brotherhood?

What happens when one of those Surface to Air missiles we give to the Muslims comes back to shoot down one of our airlines planes. Like the guns given to Mexico’s Drug dealers came back to shoot one of our Border agents.

I suppose Holder will deny everything.

"This is not the place where we need to face off with Putin & Russia."

Agreed. Putin most likely sees Obama as a functionally retarded lightweight. The smell of blood in the water when Zero plays his election year saber-rattling games will be too strong. The Russians are not going to roll over here. They are directly tied to Assad and have been for years.

This situation can seriously escalate.

He likely already has arrange a private deal with the Russians, exchanging the missile defense systems in Poland and Eastern Europe for inaction on Syria. Sure, there will be chest thumping and posing from Moscow, but it’s all theater, for the technical data the Russians want can be transferred discretely without anyone becoming the wiser.

I wouldn’t read it that way. Obama and his intervention was about strengthening the MB and and consolidating their new position in their surrogate, Egypt. Think caliphate primarily.

NO, this is not in our best interest. It is another Libya or Egypt. More of oblabla backing the muzzie extremists and the wrong horse for the national interest.

We need to stay the hell away from and out of Syria.

Assad is a bastard who at least is moderate with the Christians. Assad is Baath party and Sunni or something close to that.

The rebels on the other hand will kill the Christians whenever they get a chance.
