The conservative Governor was just elected in 2008 with a 38% plurality in a race with four serious candidates. Republicans did very, very well in Maine in 2010. Was that a short-term reaction to Obama or part of longer trend? It’s too soon to say.

I can’t recall any so called Independents ever caucussing with Republians. Am I wrong. Leiberman, Sanders, Anderson....

Murkowski in Alaska, and the guy who ran against Scozzafava would have, had he won. At the state level, I think there are some AIP-tyes who do it.

egarding Angus King, he was an independent governor of Maine years ago, so people know him already. I recall him generally being pretty popular.

Angus King may be the G-man. After all he does have a G between the AN and the US which Olypia Snowe did not have.

If you go back far enough, James Buckley was elected Senator on New York's Conservative Party ticket in 1970 and caucused with the Republicans. Harry F. Byrd, Jr. was reelected Senator from Virginia in the same year as an Independent and caucused with the Democrats. I was surprised to learn that he is still alive at 98 and is the oldest living ex-Senator.

More recently, Bob Smith of New Hampshire left the Republican party and refused to caucus with them, but kept his committee assignments which he got as a member of that party. Bob was going through a strange phase back then. There's also speculation as to what Charlie Christ might have done if he was elected to the Senate from Florida as and Independent last time around.

There's an article here that gives a rundown, and speculates that King would caucus with the Democrats if he was elected as an Independent.

He has insisted that he’s keeping an open mind about his caucus affiliation, though he has endorsed President Barack Obama for reelection.

So, communist - got it.

Sweeeeet. In a two way race, the Democrat wins. In a three way race, with this jamoke running as an independent, the Republican wins. I wonder if he is a Republican straw.

I got behind a car today sporting an Obama sticker directly over a King sticker. I had to laugh both because the message read Obama King and second this is good news because the liberal vote is divided.

“If he’s endorsed Obama for reelection, that tells us everything we need to know.”

Exactly. Also, King was officially a RAT before he “switched” to IND - remember that.

Democrats are ignoring their own candidate. That means privately they know for a fact that if they need him he’ll be there for them.

But if we win 51 or more and he’s there watch him “try to do what’s best for my constituents” and try to get with the GOP.

New poll, it’s from Boston’s NPR affiliate so.....yeah.

But anyway it’s bad

King 50
Summers 23
Dill 9

I’m most concerned with the low number for Dill, if she only takes 9% from King I don’t see him losing.

The same sample has

Obama 48%

Glove 34%

According to the Portland Press Herald, King, who was a supporter of George W. Bush in 2000 (but endorsed John Kerry in 2004), endorsed Barack Obama in the 2008 Presidential election, stating that the Illinois Democrat “...leads with hope and not through fear.” King stated on March 9, 2012, that he believed Obama should be re-elected, stating that he made his decision after “seeing the likely alternatives”.

“But anyway it’s bad”

It’s bad, but it’s not surprising. Angus King is the only candidate who has any name recognition at this point. Third-party candidates usually fade in the stretch. Also, with the Presidential election polarizing the public and the grass roots being highly active, that will cause voters to fall into their traditional party lines.
