Watch group places U.S. flags along border

BISBEE — For the fifth year, American Border Patrol, a non-governmental border watch group, plans to place several thousand flags spelling the words “Save the United States” on a billboard just feet north of the U.S.-Mexico border to commemorate Independence Day.

The new billboard will join one erected last year that used 10,000 flags to spell out “Secure the Border,” said Glenn Spencer, president of American Border Patrol.

The group will hold a special “flag raising” rally on June 30 at its border ranch in Palominas to place the flags on the border billboard. Chartered buses will bring people to the ranch from Phoenix, Tucson and Sierra Vista. For reservations, call 803-7703.

“In 2008 we placed 3,000 flags on the old barbed wire fence, and last year we had more than 10,000 flags,” Spencer said, adding the flags are sent to ABP from its regular supporters. “It’s a tradition with many people who have followed our work for many years.”

According to www.americanpatrol.com, three more boxes of flags arrived Wednesday at American Border Patrol’s headquarters. Each flag has a message attached. Many are poignant, and none more than a simple message that read: “WWII 7th Air Force, Hickam Field, Oahu” and was signed by Charles K. Muncatchy.

ABP, which has been working on the border since June of 2002, focuses on the use of technology to show what is happening at the border, and to suggest solutions. The group successfully tested an unmanned aerial vehicle in 2003 that Spencer claims prompted the Department of Homeland Security to begin using aircraft such as the Predator B drone.

In the past three years, the group has focused on developing technology to count how many people cross the border illegally. It is now testing a system called the Sonic Barrier that has the capability of detecting and identifying human, vehicular and light aircraft traffic. The system will be demonstrated on June 30.

Whoaa there patriots. Putting up flags at the border will, no doubt, be considered hate speech/actions by our pos, potus soon.

Nice sentiment but it's a waste of their time and money. Every illegal who sees it will laugh their pants off as they wave at ICE as they cross.
