The Futility of Chicago's Gun Turn-Ins
Reason ^ | Steve Chapman

Posted on 06/18/2012 5:45:22 AM PDT by rellimpank

If you've got some clothes you don't need anymore, you can give them to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. If you have an old car, you can call various organizations to take it away. And if you're in Chicago and have a gun that's burning a hole in your pocket, you can get rid of it on Saturday, no questions asked.

The city government has a great fondness for gun turn-in events. It's done six of them in the past six years, collecting more than 23,000 weapons. This one will be held at 23 churches, and anyone handing over a firearm will get a $100 gift card. The guns will then be destroyed.

This year's turn-in will no doubt garner a decent haul of weapons. But for anyone anticipating a drop in gun violence, it will mostly yield disappointment

True for all forms of gun control. They will yield disappointment for those foolish enough to expect a drop in crime, but satisfaction for those wanting to move us step by step to their "goal is a society where only the police and military are armed." to quote the late and unlamented fat SOS former mayor of Atlanta and member of HCI's board of directors, Mainturd Jackson.

No good liberal will let a little problem like “ facts” or “ reality” get in the way of feeling good.....

This is “shovel-ready” stimulus, like cash-for-clunkers. Does nothing about guns, but puts $100 into the hands of common folk who need the money for food, clothing, skittles, drugs, whatever; who in turn help merchants selling those goods. Follows the classic broken-glass theory. It will boost the amazing results of all the other wealth-transfers coming from the left over the last few years...

I’m surprised that some enterprising young locals haven’t stuck up the collection centers to pick up some fresh shootin’ irons.

The article is spot on, especially concerning Chicago.

The 'must have' gun n Da Hood right now is the .40 Cal Glock (model 22). And at a suburban Chicago gun shop - the closest one to the city I know of - with all the taxes and fees, it goes for $650.00 out the door. I just checked the price. So no South side gang-banger is going to turn in his 'Glock 40' for $100 stinking dollars. Plus I'm sure the street price for the Glock is much more than the legal purchase cost of $650.

I know this is the new 'must have' accessory for these mutts from a Video I saw last week of a group of these 'yutes' on the South side. About six or seven of them were 'rapping' about their Glocks - and killing cops- and every one of them was carrying one (the 9mm is so last year, yo). They were also all waving around handfuls of C-Notes. Pretty good for being teenage dropout losers who only speak ghetto. 'Pretty Good', until they get whacked during a drive-by, that is.

Oh, not that is matters(/s) but I doubt an NRA or GOA Member bought these guns for the punks. Or all bought at once from the same gun store (Woot-woot! RED FLAG! RED FLAG!). I also doubt that they were all taken during a burglary. The Glock 40 cal model 22 may be popular, but not that popular in a singular area. (Maybe they know Holder and he did 'His People' a favor. /s)

Steal a pistol. Kill someone. Wipe prints, if any. Turn pistol in for $100, no questions asked.

My uncle has an old revolver he found rusting away in some gutter. The chamber is frozen solid and the hammer is missing. Probably typical of the type of guns they are gonna get here.

OK, question for those in the know. I have often heard that there is "amnesty" or "immunity" for those who turn in guns at these events. Does anyone know if this is typically blanket immunity, or just local immunity (i.e. immunity from the Chicago PD if the gun is turned in in Chicago). What happens if a federal firearms offence is involved (i.e. the weapon is an illegal NFA gun or destructive device)? Does BATFE retain the option to press charges? According to the law they almost have to.

It seems to me that the Federales are going to want their man, immunity or no.

"No questions asked": like, "sure you don't want to check the value of that at Antiques Roadshow?" Or, "do they still make ammo for that thing?" Or, "aren't those considered a 'gun' only by the School Board?"
