A Russian ship believed to be carrying helicopters and missiles for Syria has been effectively stopped in its tracks off the coast of Scotland after its insurance was cancelled at the behest of the British government.
The British marine insurer Standard Club said it had withdrawn cover from all the ships owned by Femco, a Russian cargo line, including the MV Alaed.
"We were made aware of the allegations that the Alaed was carrying munitions destined for Syria," the company said in a statement. "We have already informed the ship owner that their insurance cover ceased automatically in view of the nature of the voyage."
British security officials confirmed they had told Standard Club that providing insurance to the shipment was likely to be a breach of European Union sanctions against the Syrian regime.
They said they were continuing to monitor the ship, which has been the subject of a fierce international row since US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last week revealed it was adding to the arsenal of weaponry available for Mr Assad to use against rebellious Syrian towns.
"We have various ways of keeping track of this ship and that is what we are doing," a source told The Daily Telegraph.

Dang! The British found thier stones? How about the US Administration? Didn’t think so.
We have to wit until after the election when Obama will have more flexibility.
Putin will remove his shirt and point at the British ,that is all
Why good? If the Russians are interested in stopping the Islamofascist rebels, thats fine by me.
I’m sure that bH0 will call up George Soros to personally provide insurance for the vessel so that his pal PutyPutin can deliver the cargo of rescue helicopters and lifesaving munitions.
By all accounts the USSR is supporting the Syrian government, they have been alias for years.
Britannia still rules the waves?
Someone has to to it.
Will the SHTF??
Tempest in a teapot. No Alpha dog at this time!
Unh-oh. The protesters will be out in force tonight.
How dare the Western powers put any limits on the right of Bashar al-Assad to choke down the local version of Arab spring. After all, everybody knows that the Muslim Brotherhood, a purely secular organization, has only the interests of the downtrodden majority at heart, and this is the avenue to the rise of democracy in the Middle East.
Of course, unseen below the surface, the death match between the Sunnis and the Shi’ites is going on full force, and any dispassionate opinion about the situation would be to let them muscle each other around until neither side has sufficient strength to force its will upon the other. Apparently Middle Eastern power struggles are largely predicated on neither side actually winning, but only continue to cull out the less effective and adaptable fighters on each side.
Of course, a lot of women and children end up as collateral damage, but what you want the Western powers to do? Bomb them from 30,000 feet like they did in Kosovo and Bosnia?
All it will take is one captain getting his knickers in a wad at the other and we'll be in the middle of WWIII.
From what I can gather of this earlier thread: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2896071/posts
This action was done at the behest of the US Administration....
All they have to do is call Progressive for a new policy.
It appears even tyrants are at the behest of an insurance agent. How long until there is an individual mandate for arms traffickers? /s
With Obama running the show, it not only will hit the fan it shorted out the motor, and cause an electrical fire.
What is to keep the ship from sailing without insurance?
Agree. I think we’d better take a closer look at who we, the US, claims to be supporting this time.
Probably the torpedo boats that are just out of the picture frame...
if true, did our Military overthrow zer0?
You wouldn’t have heard much.....just Putin telling Obama what he was or wasn’t going to do. Obama is scared stiff of Putin.
I think the ships can’t enter port if they
Nothing. AFAIK, the insurance comes into play if the ship has to make port. I doubt the Syrians are going to turn down the helicopters because the ship doesn’t have insurance. As long as the ship can make it to Syria without stopping at an intermediate port, there’s nothing the EU can do short of trying to board the ship at sea.
I’m curious about the whereabouts of the Kuznetsov and her escorts.
Can’t the Russians or even the Syrians just self insure?
Thanks for the ping. Damned interesting. No real air routes unless the Russkies could fly the helos over Turkey.
All Putin needs to do is indemnify the ship's owner. Russia can self-insure.
It is a strange sensation, rooting for the Russians. This is what it's come to with Obama's Arab Spring and its anti-Christian, anti-Israel subtext.
Meanwhile the US administration supports the Muslim Brotherhood !
The Russians want to help stop the Islamo-Nazi Muslim Brotherhood while the Brits want to help protect it!
Perfidious Albion strikes again!
If you are rooting for the Russians over England, you need your citizenship revoked.
The Russians support Iran... worse than the muslim brotherhood.
Good going Zero. You just started WWIII.
Hitlery has all the dem stones in a lockbox.
Actually that is what’s scheduled on the 7th if nobama cheats enough on the 6th.
Asaad is an Alawite, a secular strongman holding the Islamists in check by playing off Sunnis versus Shiites, and a protector of the Christian minority. If the Sunni "freedom fighters" take over, they will slaughter the Christians, probably the Alawites and many of the Shiites. Israel prefers Assad to an unknown Sunni Islamist.
For these reasons, primarily, I am glad that Russia is providing support for Asaad.
Frankly, I think we should stay out of it, but England is one of two allies (Israel) I would support unconditionally.
A Great backup plan. May it be!
Russian isn’t considering this an act of war?
