California Legislature approves $92.1-billion budget

The California Legislature passed a $92.1-billion budget on Friday in a vote that avoided the drama and delay that long has characterized the Capitol’s annual spending debate.

The vote, largely a foregone conclusion, was almost completely along party lines, without a single Republican supporting the plan. The Senate voted first, approving the budget 23-16. The Assembly then voted 50-25.

The budget now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, who has not said whether he will sign it. The spending plan pushed through the Legislature by Democrats is slightly larger than the one Brown proposed in May, and it makes fewer cuts to welfare, child care and college scholarships than the governor wanted.

Passing the budget on Friday allows lawmakers to meet their constitutional deadline and prevent their pay from being docked. But some major issues have not yet been decided.

First, negotiations will continue next week over social services and how to fund them. Second, the budget includes an $8-billion-plus hole that Brown and his allies want voters to fill with new taxes in November. The governor is pushing a plan to temporarily raise the states sales tax and increase income taxes for the wealthy. If voters reject the taxes, he says, the state will be forced to cut billions from public schools and colleges.

What is the total of all existing California bond interest and other long term obligations?

Why is all that not relevant, and AS important as passing a budget?

When the California moron legislature discharges their obligation for the first time in years, the report can be heard for miles around...

Heard Steinberg say the other day that this budget assumes the voters will pass the tax increase in november, and the proceeds are written into this budget.

Wonder how many other pie in the sky gimmicks are written into it.

Although I have no love for the bloated and incompetent union educational system, I can think of the hundreds of commissions and pork administrators that the state would never miss.

And then there is the "pet" parasite idle class.
Then there's the overwhelming invasion of uneducated criminal aliens and their effect on both our educational and health delivery systems.

Why is public safety and taxpayer welfare the first target of the criminal political class?

Right You are! I am a Californian and I don’t want anyone to bail this state out! The bad news is that California isn’t a lot worse than many other state you could name today, only the numbers are larger because we are the biggest state in terms of population and even bigger when it comes to per capita spending. What’s happening here is coming to a state where you live sooner than you think!

I will believe that Kalifornia is serious about its spending problem when I read that Kalifornia has repealed all of its unnecessary gun laws and eliminated the several state agencies charged with infringing my right to keep and bear arms. Until that time, I will NEVER vote to increase taxes of any kind.

Those measures are not going to get approved.The one thing I kinda like about this is that it makes higher education a buyer’s market.On one hand that does stiff some of the young high school graduates trying to get into college but on the other hand,perennial students with no means of income effectively get forced out or have to borrow more cash.

As for the K-12 system,it is inconvenient as is for the students who go there and cushy for those who work there.Unlike universities,I don’t think they can cap the amount of students they accept....so they will have to cut some positions.

Otherwise unless this State curbs laws designed to scare off business,penalizes illegal immigrants and those who hire them.California is effectively done,not mention someone else is going to have to collect in order to fund the State’s pensions.
