Russia has announced it is readying two warships to sail to Syria to protect Russian citizens, in a sign that it is taking precautions against a worsening of the security situation there.

A spokesman for Russia’s Black Sea fleet, Vyacheslav Trukhachev, told Russia’s Interfax news agency the mission would be undertaken “in case of necessity”. His comments appeared designed to clarify speculation that warships had already set sail for Syria. Interfax had earlier quoted an anonymous official as saying that was the case on Monday morning.

Are black sea marines an elite group or something? I keep seeing references to ‘black sea marines’ like they’re something special.

How is it that Putin and Obama aren't riding a bicycle built for two?

I don’t know about elite, but I would imagine they share much of the same duties that the United States’ Marine Expeditionary Units share; large, re-enforced force with much more training at the company level (Next “layer” up would be a MEU-SOC; very nasty force to have pissed at you.)

To remove the WMDs that Saddam didn't have and that weren't moved to Syria in the runup to the Iraq war?

An interesting qualifier: while retaining the country's current boundaries. The Russians think the boundaries of Syria are in play? How so? A Kurdish state, to include the Kurdish areas of Iraq and Turkey, with access to the sea through the Kurdish area of Syria?

It’s a perfectly good opportunity to butt out. Let the Russians have it...they will live to regret it when the chickens come home to roost in Chechnya. It’s too late for the US to exercise influence in that God-forsaken place, so let it boil.

Instead, we should stand ready to help Lebanon. Lebanon will be the primary beneficiary of Syria’s collapse. Lebanon used to be the Riviera of the East Coast of the Med. Now it’s...well, it’s Beirut.

Saw where UK stopped the ship with the helicopters for syria from Russia. Canceled the insurance (on the ship) and utilized this (as excuse) to stop the shipment. One can imagine the diplomatic channels are at the fry point.

An iranian news source stated today that there were to be joint military exercises between syria, iran, russian and china in syria later this year. A link was on the main board earlier. Could be misinformation, could be an attack on islamists (in syria - which is doubtful), or could be the real thing. Unknown at this point. Source cannot be trusted. Source being iran news source.

Good evening, I hope you are doing well.

This is huge

Maybe. Coupled with the joint FTX w/Iran, Ivan, and Assad, who knows?

The Bible (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth) have had many prophecies come true, some more than just once. Beware Isiah, and Ezekiel regarding Damascus and Megido.

This positioning of forces for Russia, the training with possible allies, the arab winter, all could be part of the final chapter.

Maybe not?

Now they are using that fleet to prtoject power in the face of Obama’s weakness in the region.

Putin wins.

Obama loses.

There goes the “Arab Spring” Buahahahahahaha!

The Russians are about to displace any US influence in Egypt, Libya,Syria and Iran.

Thank you so called President Obama. Thank you for THAT hope and Change.

We should send a couple of carrier groups to the area. Create a false flag event to get things rolling, sink their ships in ‘retaliation’, and use tactical nukes against their bases in Syria. It would restart the Cold War, boost the economy, and unite a majority of the country in a common purpose with “Communism” as the enemy.

/partial sarc (that WOULD be a little interesting/fun to watch)

We are definitely seeing the pieces of the war of the Latter Days and Latter Years (I personally do not believe Ezek 38 is Armageddon) shaping up.

Ezekiel 38:8 and 16 - Latter Years and Latter Days.

Look up - for our redemption draweth nigh

"The Russians are about to displace any US influence in Egypt, Libya,Syria and Iran." Other than Iran, I have no problem with the rest. Let Russia own the, rather than the Islamis cult being uncontrolled. I'm figuring Russia as learn some lessons with its Aftganiscrap situation.

The one thing I learned while being a "cold war" sailor is that Russians (and past Soviets) actually care about there children. That's why MAD worked so well. The Islamists live to die and take their women and children with them. If Russia can stall the 7th century madness of 21st high-tech ability, I say let them, so as not on our dime.

If given open season, I believe Russia will put Iran down, commerce or not. As for China, they won't align with Russia to attack the US, we owe them too much. That's a paranoid falsehood. The world is too economically entertwined. It's all chess, and I see Russia about to check the middle east. Better they die, then our children.

And if Russia or China gets too uppity and powerful, here is a warm thought for you...always think Trident! They are out there an no one knows where, unless Obama wants to "leak" their locations, but then they simply move according the Joint Chiefs. They alone could blow much of the world away. MAD is still the best game in town except for Islamist crazies. Again, let Russia deal with them. I don't want to see one more coffin or prosthetics on our children.

Do you truly think we owe the Chinese so much that the possibility of obtaining all US natural resources through an attack is off the table. We have so many assets that I cannot imagine Russia and China not considering it. Seems to be a ripe time to attempt to conquer America... We are divided, broke, militarily weakened. I think our natural resources AND making yourself top global dog, far outweigh any debts we owe China. Russia, China and Iran are not certainly sitting around the table simply discussing Syria.

Not just the Kurdish area but remember the Golan Heights also. The Israelis haven’t annexed it yet but I expect they will if there is a big disruption in Syrian gov’t. But since the Russians lost Ukraine they don’t have their big Black Sea base either——their base in Syria is extremely valuable to them and protecting it against Syrian changes explains most of their actions to this point. Not to mention the money Asshat owes Putin. Ivan is getting sick of arabs welching on their arms debts no doubt.

There are Syrian refugee camps on every border. It wouldn’t be surprising at all if Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq AND Israel all decided to take a piece of Syria——in memory of Attaturk, of course.

Russia has indeed always wanted that north/south Iranian rail line. Remember how we used it during WW II to supply the backside of Russia with trucks, aluminum, etc.? I don’t see the downside of Putin explaining to the Mullahs that they’d be running the railroad for awhile.

Always, always, ALWAYS remember there are something north of 300 million PRIVATE firearms in this country. The other guys know that in spades. They all remember Admiral Yamamoto warning his own high command that a land invasion of north America would be suicidal because it would face a gun behind every bush. It pees ‘em off just as much as it bothers some in our own gov’t but it is our largest ace-in-the-hole as long as the owners stand ready to use them. That is the largest collection of private firepower in the known universe and no one, repeat NO ONE,is going to challenge it on the ground.

don’t know about the thought of nobody wanting to challenge us on the ground. They might would leave us to ourselves in the dark for say six months to a year, and if our Military was allowed to we might turn off other countries lights ourselves, if our Military was allowed to. If our Military was not allowed to ... it makes it an entirely different game. Of course once some, in our Military, found out there would be heck and death for their commanders. Lots of variables, and one can guess what our current cic would do. He works for the enemy. Now six months to a year in the dark and it would only amount to a mop up operation to invade the United States (imho). Worst case scenario of the worst case scenarios yet one which (imho) has to be considered, if one is serious regarding surviving in lights out conditions.

Don't believe your hypothesis for a second. The world is too economically enter-twined. Yes, some leaders of China and Russia want more power, but not at the cost of losing their economic advantage.

Forget the "cold war" and think. Why would China or Russia want to destroy their greatest economic importer? Why would they want to destroy their biggest debtor? They don't, but they do want more face and become more powerful in their regions. Fine, let them have them. We have numerous Tridents out there with the ability to destroy them and even the planet if they attack!

Everyone forgets about them. Most think ICBM's and bombers. Thankfully, China and Russia don't forget about our Tridents.

Agreed. Putin wants to look powerful, especially now that the USA has a weak president.

Still, since I'm no expert, what is the down side of Russia supporting the Syrian regime, other than they support terrorists? The US will still trade with Russia, and they will still be on the Security Council of the UN (f**k the UN), and still have nuclear weapons.

So someone tell me why we should care if Syria remains status quo? Even if they have their "Arab Spring", how good will that be?

Personally, the only nation I give a sh*t about in that region is Israel. What ever it takes to protect a freedom -loving democratic ally is what the US should be about. Screw every sick Muslim nation in the area. I couldn't care less if they all find allah tomorrow, and yes, I mean ALL of them.
