A U.S. supercomputer has won back the crown in the never-ending battle for the world's most powerful supercomputer. Its victory is the latest milestone marking the steady climb of computing power all across the globe.
The Top500 industry list gave its No. 1 ranking to the Sequoia supercomputer housed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California — a spot earned by Sequoia's ability to crunch 16.32 quadrillion calculations per second (16.32 petaflops/s). Such supercomputing power is used by the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration to simulate nuclear weapons tests for older weapons that have been sitting in the U.S. arsenal.
"Computing platforms like Sequoia help the United States keep its nuclear stockpile safe, secure and effective without the need for underground testing," said Thomas D'Agostino, NNSA administrator.

But due to Coal Power cutbacks, the computer will only be able to operate briefly during non-peak power usage periods which will curtail the total computing output to tube-computer days.
The EPA said: “We’re working on that! With the advent of more green power, we should be able to increase their total computing output to the early solid state computers”.
When the EPA was asked when that would be, they stated: “We’re not sure, however, on of our top engineers was overheard saying, “When hell freezes over.””.

How many calculations does it have to crunch to know we’re screwed if we get rid of our nukes and everyone else doesn’t?
Pretty soon all the only nukes this freaking country will have are going to be simulated.

Although we still have the warheads, only about 10% of the 30,000 weapons we once had are ready, weaponized, and not in storage. Mating them to a missile takes a long amount of time for each warhead and we have a finite number of engineers available to do the job.
And Obama, in his own words, wants to further reduce our arsenal from the 3,300 we have down to the “high hundreds,” which will practically INVITE a first strike.

Back in 2010 I was privileged to visit the system which is now #17 located in France. Our company, Bull, had just installed it. At the time it was at the top of the heap for European installations. These beasts are HUGE! There are so many cooling fans screeching that we were required to wear noise suppression ear muffs as we walked through the room.
We, at Bull, work with the folks from Lawrence Livermore Labs on the open software job scheduler used by a plurality of high-end HPC systems including the #1 system. The LLNL folks and a separate company do all the modifications required by the IBM BlueGene systems. The BlueGene optical interconnect is a really complex communications fabric which makes the scheduling requirements very specific to their architecture.

If Obama has his way the days of the US as a military superpower are numbered.
Nuclear weapons and the guarantee that anyone that uses them on us would be wiped off the face of the earth has kept the peace.
Not good will. Not good intention. Those are just another term for naivety, and failure to accept the true nature of the world.
Any treaty eliminating OUR nuclear weapons will only invite any number of evil actors in this world to exploit our weakness, to our peril. We cannot expect anyone to keep treaties but ourselves and any country that truly believes in the rule of law, but they are few and they are our allies.
Buy hey, I’m getting tired of trying to defend liberals from themselves, and they are generally concentrated in the biggest targets of such an attack. If Obama is re-elected they deserve whatever happens, but a nuclear first strike will make Pearl Harbor and 911 look trivial in comparison.
All I know is we can’t let obamski be able to have more flexibility on this issue, when he said this to Medvedev to relay to Putin.
