San Francisco to study birds to keep America's Cup afloat
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | June 17, 2012 | Phillip Matier and Andrew Matier

To keep the big America's Cup contest afloat, San Francisco has agreed to spend $150,000 to study whether the racing boats - and their towering sails - will scare birds on the bay.

The study, which will be conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, is part of a settlement of a lawsuit brought by a group that included former Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin.

"It's not that we're trying to head-shrink the birds," said Mike Lynes of the Golden Gate Audubon Society. "But when they take off because they are frightened, they expend energy, and that can affect their health."

Amazing that those birds are still around after all those Clipper ships sailed in and out of SF harbor back in the day.

Mr. Lynes is a self-certified idiot. Perhaps his next concern should be how badly the Transamerica building affects San Francisco birds by denying them a roof edge on which to perch. Or maybe he could suggest that the SF Board of Supervisors help the birds in MacArthur Park get from the ground to the lower branches of the trees so they don’t have to fly there themselves. Maybe they could buy each of the birds a little birdie umbrella to deal with the rain.

Freighters go faster than the America’s Cup sail boats. How many come into the SF harbor every day? The containers are stacked nearly as high as the sails.

Oh, goodie! Then that means that expending energy can hurt us. The doctor told me to exercise to IMPROVE my health. Obviously, he is wrong. Think I’ll go back to bed.

Too bad they don’t have the same level of concern for their taxpayers and entrepreneurs.

I get the feeling that this is one of those 'self esteem' operations. Here an activist gets the reinforcement of taxpayer monies being spent on a feel-good but essentially STUPID study.

I would presume that there have been any number of yacht races in San Francisco (SF) waters along with Tall Ship parades, pleasure boating and of course, commercial and military transits. So, if this study does show a deleterious effect, are all of these activites going to be banned or have increased regulation? Go for it, California needs to become even more regulated! /sarc

It will come as no surprise that the liberals are “for the birds”.

Amazing that those birds are still around after all those Clipper ships sailed in and out of SF harbor back in the day.

SF was built on the backs of those suffering birds. The whole city is founded on misery and hatred of birds. That monstrosity of a bridge they built has also led to the death of millions of birds.

And they haven't even begun to think about the sea lions and how a boat might bump into one of them.

That city is worse than all the dams that prevent the fish from swimming upstream. Just as we are tearing them down, we need to destroy SF (quietly so as not to scare the birds) and throw the debris in the bay to serve as a more diverse area for the fish to inhabit, and to bring tranquility back to the lives of the fish and sea lions.

A lot of this is Frank Sinatra's fault.

When will people learn to take their business someplace else?

This is extortion.

When people move on instead of submitting the extortion will stop.

Poor little birdies, afraid of some sails and having bad health effects. Sign ‘em up for Obamacare...there’s plenty to go ‘round for everybody.

“We have learned that birds respond well to puppets, so here is our puppet friend BOB THE THERAPY BIRD. Bob, what do you have to say to Carl the seagull?”

“Quit crapping on my car you filthy....”

“Oh, Bob, that’s no way to help Carl!”

“I’ll help Carl with some bird shot if he dumps on my BMW again!”

“Perhaps group therapy would work better.”
