(Reuters) - A former Rutgers University student convicted of bias crimes for using a webcam to spy on his gay roommate's sexual encounter was released from a New Jersey jail on Tuesday after serving 20 days of his 30-day sentence.

Dharun Ravi, 20, looking unshaven, left the Middlesex County jail shortly after 8:30 a.m. EDT (1230 GMT) accompanied by his attorney. They left from a side exit and avoided a throng of media that was awaiting his release.

Ravi received a 10-day credit for good behavior, allowing him to leave after serving 20 days of his 30-day sentence imposed by Judge Glenn Berman.

I feel sorry for Ravi. He was railroaded by the gay rights activists. None of this would have ever happened if his room mate was normal.

But because little Clementi was the victim of an older male sexual pevert predator; he ended up taking a header off the GW. And lives were ruined.

bias crimes

So... spying wasn't the issue, but spying on a homo encounter was?

‘bias’ or ‘hate’ crimes are bogus and need to be addressed by the SCOTUS. these 1984/brave new world crimes are ‘thought’ crimes and have no place in a free society.

that being said this Ravi guy needed to be arrested and convicted for invasion of privacy....big time.

“Based on a review of Mr. Ravi’s criminal record, Immigration and Customs Enforcement is not initiatiating removal proceedings at this time,” an ICE spokesman confirmed in a statement on Monday."

The Obama regime says no to deportation.

Ravi's a inhumane sociopath who now knows he has no fear of American justice. We don't need his kind of character immigrating to the United States.

Why? This was some silly college prank. If Ravi had recorded his roomie making out with a girl, this would never have been news. But because Clementi was a fag....

Ravi was persecuted here.

There was no convincing evidence that Ravi had anything to do with Clementi’s suicide. It's just as likely, if not more likely, that something that occurred between Clementi and his fellow pervert caused him to kill himself. Watching someone in your own room for two seconds should not be punishable by 20 days in jail.

“‘bias’ or ‘hate’ crimes are bogus “

I hate the concept of “hate crimes.’ Judges are now giving jail time to ‘hate’ tweets.

Canada is coming to its senses. “A bill to scrap the controversial Section 13 “hate crimes” provision of the Canadian human rights code passed (on June 8th 2012) third and final reading in the House of Commons by a vote of 153 to 136 late Wednesday. It now goes to the Conservative-dominated Senate where it is expected to pass and be given royal assent.”

The idea of ‘thought’ crimes consigns all us to mental prisons.

The deceased kick Ravi out of their shared dorm room so that he could invite gay strangers in to commit sodomy. I guess this sort of thing is no longer prohibited in a state funded institution of higher learning.

Ravi claimed he left the camera on because he was concerned for his personal property. He was attempting to accommodate his roommate while protecting his personal property. He was persecuted not prosecuted.

Ravi was spying, or at least attempting to embarrass, but at the same time, it was HIS room too - and Clementi was bringing unknown men, from outside the campus, into it, for God-knows-what-reason. Doesn't he have a right to know what's going on in his own room?

I stand by my condemnation of the concept of ‘bias’ ‘hate’ of ‘thought’ crimes.

as far as the invasion of privacy? had someone videoed me either eating a pizza like a pig, or making out with a ‘closing time’ chick, back in college...then passing the video around...I would have beaten the living crap out of him and destroyed his equipment if it was available to destroy.

as far as the dead guy playing for the other team....it is not a pleasant thought...but if those people dont push it on me like they try to do on tv etc....and stay in the closet...thats fine by me....unfortunately this Ravi guy decided that he shouldnt let it stay in the closet. the punishment? I dont know. seems like the school should have dormed homos with homos and straights with straights....

He never should have been assigned to room with a sodomite in the first place. He should have demanded a change and if they refused? Shook the dust off his feet and left the place.

Any school that forces that kind of circumstance on a person in the name of "tolerance" (actually intolerance) has nothing whatsoever to teach me that I would want to learn.

You can probably defend all those actions, but then he went and posted the video online, which shows some malicious intent. I can’t say I don’t sympathize with him, because I may have wanted to do the same thing, if it was my roommate, to embarass him into to stopping his disgusting behavior. Still, just because I can symptathize doesn’t mean he didn’t do anything wrong. 30 days in jail was just too stiff a punishment for it, it should have been an academic disciplinary matter.

uh you are wrong. get off of FR you’re embarrassing with your utter lack of facts. There was never a video, as there was nothing EVER RECORDING. Ravi LIVE STREAMED a three second make out session to a couple of his friends then cut it off.
Again, no video, nothing was recorded and passed around or posting anywhere.

So... spying wasn't the issue, but spying on a homo encounter was?

He was convicted of invasion of privacy and a "bias crime" - so, both spying and spying on a homo encounter were the issues. I believe the judge actually sentenced him separately for each count, and the jail sentence was for obstruction of justice (he deleted a bunch of twitter posts/other computer files) - he got probabtion for both the invasion of privacy and "bias crime" charges.

It is not at all uncommon for a college student to kick their roommate out of a shared dorm room to invite relative strangers in to commit all sorts of sexual acts. Straight, gay, whatever - doesn't give the roommate reason to spy (and invite others to do so).

Ravi claimed he left the camera on because he was concerned for his personal property. He was attempting to accommodate his roommate while protecting his personal property. He was persecuted not prosecuted.

If it was really out of concern for his personal property, why tweet about it and invite others to watch?

What crime? Having to endure his roommate having gay sex in a tiny little dorm room that he was paying for as part of his education? If his gay roommate was comfortable in his homosexual skin he wouldn’t have committed suicide.

WHICH pervert do you want to deport? In case you don’t know it... Clementi is dead. He jumped off a bridge.

Or maybe you mean the pervert who was doing it with Clementi. Pretty sure he is a US citizen. Can’t deport US citizens.

You make NO SENSE.

Or do you really think some kid who has had it to to here with the fag lifestyle IN HIS OWN DORM ROOM and pulled some silly college prank is a pervert?

What crime?”

Exactly. I’ve been pointing out that if Ravi recorded his roomie doing it with a girl... He never would have been charged. But since we now have special rights for queers... This is now a “bias crime”.

“If his gay roommate was comfortable in his homosexual skin he wouldn’t have committed suicide.”

If anyone should have been charged with a crime; it should have been the older sexual predator that was preying on a young boy - the result of which lead that young boy to take a header off the George Washington bridge.

If my roommate had brought some sodomite outsider, whom I believe used a fake name in his romantic dalliance with the deceased, into my dormroom, I think filming him would have been the nicest thing I would have done. I would have found a way to convince the young homo to do his "dating" off-campus.

Great, so public university dormitories are basic brothels, paid for by the tax-payer.

If it was really out of concern for his personal property, why tweet about it and invite others to watch?

What other recourse does he have. I'd have been revengeful too had I been treated that way. The universities refuse to enforce their rules, and some kids take it upon themselves to penalize. Should we be shocked?

A father of a your teenage girl in CA has just been indicted for killing her pimp. Numerous calls to the authorities yielded no results. What else do you do - this is liberalism.

Why don't you try that sometime? Plant a cam in someone bedroom and live stream the sex out to all your fb buddies and see what happens to you? This is about gross invasion of privacy it is not about the gender of the participants.

In March of this year, Boston College football player Jaryd Rudolph was charged criminally for distributing audio of a female student who was having sex with Rudoph's roommate. Just for the record.

It wasn't his bedroom, it was the college's, and I doubt most parents would be happy to know their child's roommate was bringing some older, non-student sodomite into their child's room/suite to engage in rather anonymous casual sex.

I cannot believe, but for the homo angle, the college would permit it otherwise.

In the dorms I lived in, non-student visitors had to register upon arriving at the college. I would assume the colleges are MORE restrictive on dorm room activities then they were back in my day, except when it comes to aberrant sex.

I'd feel the same way about a roommate inviting a female hooker back to my room.

I find the idea of "privacy" in a college dorm room to be laughable on its face and believe fully that the deceased enjoyed flaunting his activities. I didn't hear a single shred of evidence that the defendant's actions led to the man's suicide, but that is surely enough the motiviation for the prosecution.

When I wanted "privacy" at college I got an off-campus apartment. I certainly didn't engage in rude behavior that would alienate the one person who could effortlessly abrogate that privacy.
