J.C. Penney says President Francis is leaving
Fox News ^ | 6/18/2012 | AP

Posted on 06/19/2012 8:13:51 AM PDT by ponygirl

In the latest sign of turbulent times at J.C. Penney Co., the mid-price department store chain said Michael Francis, the former Target Corp. executive brought in to help redefine the brand, is leaving the company. In a terse statement issued late Monday, the department store operator gave no reason for the abrupt departure of Francis, who had been on the job for a little over eight months. As president, Francis was responsible for the marketing of a controversial new pricing plan that aims to get rid of hundreds of sales events. He was also oversaw merchandising and product development.

Shares fell nearly 6 percent in after-hours trading.

No mention of the gay Mother's and Father's Day ads that went over with the public like a ton of bricks.

I’ll never understand why well established brands spend egregious coin rebranding themselves instead of providing new products or services.

Eliminating sales was just plain stupid.

My grandmother could have told him that...

Heterophobic Marketing Strategy wasn’t the way to go?

It’s incontrovertible that their recent merchandising changes have proven disastrous.

I know people who used to shop with them regularly who are extremely unhappy and simply vacated the place.

This was prior to any gay ads, though I’m sure that didn’t help.

That’s not why their stores now look as empty as the Moon.

It was unpopular merchandising changes, if you read what the article is “crediting” this departing executive with, who implemented them for eight months and created an utter debacle.

I’m sure gay ads didn’t help, but if you assume this is all about gay ads you’d be way off.

People I know who abandoned the store did it from day one of the merchandising changes they despised and before any gay ads ran.

Yet another sign of the eventual demise of this once-great retailer. Pandering to gay consumers was an act of desperation, and only served to alienate their other customers. Early next year, look for J.C. Penney to announce they are closing some of their “less profitable” stores. Hopefully new management will take over, put an end to this ridiculous marketing strategy based on political correctness, and will redirect the company’s focus back towards their more traditional customers.

Yep. trying to suck in new customers won't lick your financial problems.

Guess somebody actually believed 2% of the population really really really has more money than the other 98%.

That's like somebody throwing their entire life savings into lottery tickets because there is so much money in the lottery.

My spouse regularly shopped at JC Penney. After their egregious stunt of pandering to homosexuality she totally stopped shopping there. How about that. A middle-American merchandiser cuts hard across the grain of middle America to appeal to .05% of a special interest group and they wonder why sales have dropped like a brick.

I doubt they’ll gain back the confidence of the consumer just because they stop being GayC Penney. (if the do) I would never entertain the notion of returning to this store. Can’t trust them now.

I’m sure gay ads didn’t help, but if you assume this is all about gay ads you’d be way off.

Before the homosexual ads showed up in May and June, there was the hiring of Ellen to be the face of JCP.

My wife and I cut up our JCP cards that day.

To this day I refuse to even enter a Chili's restaurant because of their homosexual spokesperson from years ago.

And I also announced the other day at the car wash that I would not be back as their TV set in the waiting room was always tuned to Ellen.

Please stop using the term “gay”. There is nothing “gay” about these perverts. They are homosexuals, sodomites, plain and simple. I have a lovely sister whose name is Gay and I cringe every time I see the term “gay” used for perversion. This is their way of making it seem like what they do is OK, and it’s not. We shouldn’t indulge them by using their verbage.

JC and a ton of other retailers forgot one important aspect of the ‘shopping experience’ for many.

It’s recreational.

Sure, you need ‘stuff’ but you can fill than need at another retailer if you aren’t enjoying the ‘shopping experience. And gutting the ‘sales’ that many enjoy, thought they aren’t really sales at all, or associating the brand with a 2% minority when the vast majority are on/of a different mindset greatly reduces the desire to ‘recreate’ in that facility/with that company.

JC and like outlets/retailers have pushed customers to the competition or just eliminated the recreational aspect overall for their primary base - women with credit cards. They now just shop online or at places where they don’t have their ‘fun’ removed by corporate policy. And the money they save gets spent on other ‘fun’ activities.

Perhaps they should have asked actual shopping women or their husbands for this bit of info rather that a guy wishing he was a woman.

We all make mistakes. Some are more egregious than others. Some of the best old businesses for the average buyer are gone, CR Anthony's, Sears & Roebuck, Montgomery Wards has changed extensively, Walmart has proved to be tough stiff competition which has caused many changes. Penny's has had good quality basic items and some nice leathers coats vest, Jackets, etc.,

Society changes has forced many stores to revamp. It is a tough business. Things get soiled, stolen, styles constantly changing. This last advertising JC Pennys has been doing is very costly and not that enticing. MOO! This guy has lost business and perhaps many customers. Hopefully they can recover.

I used to LOVE JCP. But this new marketing ploy is not good. I do not even look at their ads. Even if I was not offended by their trend toward supporting gay families, I hate the “specific” single item strategy in their recent ads. They show like ONE polo shirt style, say the price is always $19.99 or whatever... instead of having a sale of 40% off on all men’s knit shirts. If I don’t like the one pictured, I am not even going there. If I do like the one pictured, I am not going there, because it would seem like the single item might be selling in the hundreds or thousands, and who wants the same shirt everyone else has?

I was in the store a few months back, looking for “clearance” racks on baby clothes. They did not have “clearance” racks any more. Not good.

Francis was responsible for the marketing of a controversial new pricing plan that aims to get rid of hundreds of sales events.
The pricing plan is "controversial" but same-sex parents isn't? BS.
I thought the pricing plan was a great idea and would stop (and usually buy) at Penny's first when shopping.
But when they came out with the queer parents thing - I stopped going there completely.

Shopping is no fun without a sale.

My wife cannot buy something without telling me how well it fits, how well it will go with her other "things", and how much she saved on it.

I cannot buy anything without saying how powerful it is, how it will go with my other "things", and how much time it will save me.

I have tried for years to get FReepers to use SSAD (same sex attraction disorder) but it is hard to fight the wordsmiths on the left.

Their agenda may be completely wrong but like any good follower of Saul Alinsky, the left is very adept of perverting the language to make their perversion seem normal and main stream even when logic would always dictate they were 100% wrong.

While I’m not one of them, that seems to be the case.

There were lots of posts on their facebook page of women complaining about shopping no longer being fun and not feeling like they were getting good deals without coupons anymore.

I’d rather go in, know I’m going to get a good item at a fair price and get out. Shopping has never and will never be fun to me. I get hives just thinking about through racks! But I think I’m in the minority. =D

Walmart has triumphed and the others you mentioned failed because Walmart is obsessed with keeping prices low. It's a great business model (Standard Oil, IKEA, etc). The other retailers eventually succumb to the idiotic idea that they can increase their markup (by "just a little") and it gets out of hand. They end up being overpriced and irrelevant.

You always hear in corporate jargon that “change” is good. You have to be adaptive, exciting, inventive (think outside the box) or you will fall behind. Dependability is considered boring. Like the book “who moved my cheese”, but sometimes there are consequences for these “inventive” changes.

But let’s look at the examples of failed changes.

Just ask companies like Netflix who made these changes. Or makers of “new” Coke, Deloreans, Beta machines, and Edsels.

I also did not like the gay ads, but you’re right the problems started before then. Their customer base had become accustomed to weekend coupon sales. You were never going to wean them onto an “every day low pricing” strategy. So having lost their traditional customer base, they set out after a new one (Gays and Metrosexuals) who would never be caught setting foot in JC Pennys.

Really? I haven't really shopped for clothes there for a while. I have to shop the "fat lady" dept. and I have never liked their stuff, but, my daughters would go through the "clearance" stuff. I have noticed a store that is very empty the last time I went in.

I agree with those that don't like the new "catalog" that they send out occasionally. I just dump it into the recycle as there is nothing that interests me. I did get an e-mail last week with a $10 coupon for Penny's and I was surprised because I thought all of that had stopped (hadn't received one since last Christmas).

So, Penney's was having problems before they changed their marketing, and adding the "gay" focus just made things a lot worse. So, this guy is like Barack Obama in a way. He got a bad situation, and he decided to change things, and now the company's bottom line is even worse.

Exactly!

Look under the “SALE” tag and you’ll see the regular price is often the sale price.

Sale doesn’t necessarily mean it’s less!

But I do like Kohls.

I’ve never noticed that the sale price is the regular price at Kohls, but I have seen it just a few pennies different at some stores—never at Kohls though. Wal-Mart actually tried to do the clearance price the same as the regular price the other day on a kid’s toothbrush. I took it back when I found out by looking it up online. Also Wal-Mart will do the few cents different sales price.

What Kohls does do is have a shirt for $40 then say it’s now half off. Well the shirt was not worth $40. $20 is the actual regular price in reality, but you think you are getting it half off. I do like that they offer 30% off periodically for their credit card holders and you can use this on clearance items that are sometimes 80% off. I mostly buy clearance items at Kohls when I have a 30% coupon. I always laugh when the cashier tells me at the end, “You spent $4.53 today and saved $161.80.” Yeah right! That’s an actual receipt of mine BTW. I did have $40 of Kohls cash to use on that too. They’re still making a profit and I’m getting some discount.
