Is Dad the New Mom? The Rise of Stay-At-Home Fathers
ABC News via news.yahoo.com ^ | Mon Jun 18, 2012 | SHARYN ALFONSI and CLAIRE PEDERSEN

While Erica Howard-Potter manages her job as a high-powered tax attorney, her husband Jake Howard-Potter manages the house, the chores and the couple's very active 2-year-old daughter, Skyler.

Jake, who is a sculptor by trade, is the epitome of the so-called "trophy dad." The 37-year-old stays at home and stays fit, completing triathlons one day and expertly negotiating naptime and tea parties the next. And he is not alone.

"I had a dad say to me 'that skirt is really cute' and I thought who would have imagined that two dads would be sitting at swim class saying that a skirt is cute," he said.

According to the most recent Census, the number of stay-at-home fathers in the United States has tripled in the past 10 years up to 154,000. Yet, these at-home dads are still the exception to the traditional household and many treading in unchartered parenting waters.

Dad the New Mom

Yes of course - because in order to help take care of one's own children one must grow breasts and lose a Y chromosome /s

I love the media. So on top of 10-20 year old trends.

Thank you!
It’s like when fathers say that they are “babysitting” the kids. No Dude, you’re parenting.

These poor guys have been so marginalized, they forget who they are. Dads are so important! For boys, to show them what they should be. For girls, to show them who they should pick as a Father for their own children.

“Is Dad the New Mom?”

No, he’s just been unemployed for three years. But, yeah, ABC, spin it to make it sound like more dads are staying home voluntarily.

Research indicates that children reared by only their father do much better in life than those reared by only their mother, suggesting that perhaps “Mom” should be “the new Dad,” although that’s impossible, of course.

I would like to be independently wealthy so that my husband and I could both be full-time parents and community benefactors. Wage-slavery is a drag.

You said that so well. My husband and I are helping to raise our nine year old grandson who has been abandoned by his father. Since he was three, he has spoken to his father twice by phone, and seen him once. Fathers are so important to their children...He has missed so much watching this precious little boy grow up. No one can take the place of a father. No matter how hard we try.

In a country of 300 million that number is pretty insignificant. I much prefer writers who have something to say.

Oh c’mon circlecity. I bet SHARYN and CLAIRE are just so proud of themselves for this article! They must be all atingle, as they sip their latte’s, flush with such rich sensations of diversity and relevance.

(Their IQ’s, meanwhile, are probably barely out of the single digits. They’d be better off on crack than on their tired brand of hackneyed liberalism.)

I saw a ‘Tide’ commercial the other day with a guy talking about the product and doing the laundry. Then a little girl came in and asked...”Daddy, will you braid my hair.” To which he replied something like...”Fishbone or French?” I thought it was a joke, but it was dead serious. Seems like they’re trying to aim their marketing at ‘two daddies’ crap.

Blah blah blah blah...

The fact is, the vast majority of stay home parents are women. The media would love our society to turn into a fully maternal one in the workplace.

It's not happening. Dream on Lefties...

I know one of these couples. They are childless. The wife is a high power attorney. The husband renovates the house (mostly hands-on), tends a garden, drives the wife on her once or twice a week 200 mile commute and stays with her if she has to travel. Works out great for both of them and her employer.

“...her husband Jake Howard-Potter”

How does a man get a hyphenated name? Did he have 2 fathers? Natural and stepfather? Was he married to another man? Typo? Just asking...
