SEIU To Focus On 8 Battleground States [Will Spend $85M: ACORN By Another Name!]

June 19, 2012 SEIU To Focus On 8 Battleground States

By Melanie Trottman

The Service Employees International Union said it will spend a similar amount of money to re-elect President Barack Obama as it did in 2008, but will reach out to three times as many potential voters this year with a focus on eight battleground states.

The union spent about $85 million in 2008 and “this year will look similar,” said political director Brandon Davis.

“But that’s not where our advantage is. Our advantage quite frankly is on the ground,” Mr. Davis told reporters on a conference call Tuesday afternoon.

The union plans to make 13 million phone calls, knock on more than three million doors and hold more than one million conversations with potential voters in battleground states including Colorado, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. That’s fewer states than the 14 it targeted in 2008, underscoring its strategy to deepen and expand its reach in key locations.

The union hopes to rely on 100,000 volunteers and 750 full-time campaign workers in battleground states. It plans to expand its reach in part by contacting more non-union members and sharpening its focus on registering Latinos and African-Americans, said SEIU officials.

Organized labor is facing the prospect of weakening political power and declining membership as state lawmakers cut benefits and bargaining rights of public-sector union workers. Still, unions remain one of the Democratic party’s most loyal supporters, using their funding and network of members to generate votes.

“We will have the final word when we speak up with our votes,” said Eliseo Medina, SEIU’s international secretary treasurer.

Coming to Colorado, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. They’ll try to pull every trick in the book.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2897166/posts This thread has essentially the same list of swing states, suggesting that both sides agree on the key states for this election:

I see eight swing states: New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado and Nevada. And I see five battleground states: North Carolina, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Minnesota.

I live in Colorado and I kind of hope they do show up....could be a fun conversation. Of course I live in an extremely conservative neighborhood in one of the most conservative counties in the state, so I doubt they will bother.

Too many people are ‘aware’ of these people.

They don’t help the better unions at all.

Not all union members are ‘thugs’ or ‘democRATS’ but
all thugs ‘could be’ a ‘union member’ and ‘democRAT’.

Make sure your dogs are up to date on their rabies shots. You wouldn’t want them to get sick if they happen to bite one of the union idiots.

Where is the GOP response to this boots-on-the-ground field attack? I suspect there is none.

How do these po' unions have so damn much money after all of the "assaults" by conservatives on their precious rights? Wish my boss was so rich he could aford 85 million dollars to lobby on my behalf.

I don't buy the 85 million figure BTW. Unions have hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions in their "stash". Ready at the drop of a hat to defeat anyone foolish enough to cross them.

There is a place I work in STL as a contractor and the regular employees just hate us. My first day there, I remember thinking I would fire every single one of these insubordinate a**holes. Months later I found out why; they are all SEIU..

Will we hear an ear splitting scream about this in a similar vein to the hysteria about Karl Rove’s group and the Koch Bros.?

To win, it will take cubic dollars. If they spend 85 mil, we gotta spend 125 mil AND have more boots on the ground. We gotta do the same thing to these damn unions as RR did to the Soviet Union, break em financially.

We shall see if the conservatives can do the walk.

Probably not.

PS CAIRO (Reuters) - Hosni Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for 30 years until overthrown by a revolution in the “Arab Spring” last year, was declared clinically dead by his doctors on Tuesday, the state news agency MENA said in a report confirmed by a hospital source.

And here I thought SEIU focused on representing their members on issues of fair pay and safety.
Didn’t realize self preservation via political activism benefited their members.

We confronted these fat SEIU boys when they tried to crash a local tea party meeting, and they ran into a building, locked themselves inside and cried for the cops to rescue them. There’s not much “there” there.

I have friends here in CO that are registered independents. In 2008 they were visited by the goon squad six times at their door.

Visits by team McCain Palin: zero.

So they voted for......0.

I’d be willing to go help out in a swing state for a week or two hopefully not just making phone calls for 8 hours.

Need to either cut federal funding to local governments or push them to spend more while avoiding activities (purchases, business, etc.) that generate revenues (default and government shutdowns: the other solution). IMO, the second solution will be necessary, because the political/regulator class is bipartisan and largely local.
