Homophobic Christian pretends to be gay for a year, writes book about experiment
New York Daily News ^ | Friday, June 15, 2012 | Rheana Murray

A self-described homophobic Christian posed as a gay man for an entire year, even “coming out” to family and friends in the process, all to reform his beliefs.

“[I wanted] to see if there was any justification in the fear I had,” Timothy Kurek, of Nashville, told MSNBC.

Kurek, 26, who says his religious upbringing taught him that homosexuality was a sin, launched the experiment in January 2009 after a close female friend broke down in tears and admitted she was gay.

“She had just come out to her family and been brutally disowned,” Kurek said. “She had been excommunicated from her entire life and two words changed it all. Two simple words. I’m gay.”

His friend’s plight caused Kurek to question his faith, and so he began his journey as a fictitious homosexual, beginning by telling his family members he was gay.

“My family was very supportive initially,” he told MSNBC. “They treated me with the love and respect I expected. I don’t think they quite knew how to react to having a gay family member, but, you know, that was the religious barrier there that we are all kind of captive to.”

Kurek began to spend less time with his religious circles and hang out in Nashville’s “gayborhood,” mingling with the LGBT community at bars, coffee shops and bookstores.

All the while, he was writing a book about his experience, to be released in October. Kurek is currently running a campaign to raise money through pre-sales of the untitled book, at Indiegogo.com.

He told the Daily News the book will include details about how he interacted with the LGBT community, whether anyone could sense he was actually straight, and what his parents said when he admitted to them that he wasn't really gay, and that his "coming out" was only an experiment.

Kurek admits his less-than-authentic journey cannot match that of an honestly gay man.

“I will be the first one to say that my experience is severely limited,” he told MSNBC. “There is no way I could possibly understand what it’s like to be actually gay.

“And the book itself is not at all about what it is like to be gay, but only about how the label of gay impacted my external life and how those things kind of altered my faith and challenged my beliefs.”

Good reply! More people should pretend to be Christians, the responce will be shocking!

Be a real Christian, and the world will hate you for it!

“Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.” (1 Peter 4:16)

We can not control our thoughts, we can however control our actions.

There is clear distinction in the Torah as to whether this is a passing thought or something upon which one dwells at length. The latter is under our control. Hence the quote.

He would have been groping for the door in his blindness, right along with those in Sodom who so disgustingly groped so long ago.

He pretends to believe the Bible, but he does not. He pretends to have 'new and higher enlightenment' just like a hippie professor and his libertine followers spouting off during and since the nineteen sixties filth and perversion movement.

Eternity is a long time and this future worm food will see how dreadful are the payments for his lies and blasphemy as he calls the Almighty a liar and corrects the Apostle Paul.

Woe unto those who call evil good and call good evil.

He is not helping those people, who are most certainly in dire spiritual bondage, he is hurting them for his own selfishness. He is cementing their destruction due to his personal carnality and cowardice masquerading as understanding.

This shallow liar must think everyone is a ignorant and mindless as he is. He reminds me of a criminal who thinks his make believe story will fool experienced detectives into discounting his blood and DNA (and his alone) being all over the murder victim.

He is a gross example of why someone like an Obama was elected for any office.

The very idea that someone who was really a Christain would lie to his parents and friends (causing them untold horrors and pain) to pretend he was in their eyes a practitioner of what the Bible clearly marks as an 'abomination'. (A typical leftwing excuse for selfishness, gutter behavior and lawbreaking during the 1960s, as they would say, "oh, i was just doing all that horrible stuff as part of investigation for writing my thesis") LIARS

Kurek, is a typical Bible rejecting manipulator who will tell a thousand lies to cover for his perversion and rebellion.

He has zero honor and even less credibility.

As Jean Cocteau said, “[trying something] once is an experiment, twice is an addiction.

I dont think that was the point. The experiment was not on the rights and wrongs of Homosexuality, but on the reactions of others to homosexuality. And frankly, said reactions are not always what they should be.

Personally, I don't think there are going to be any startling revelations in all this. From the excerpts in the article, it seems the reactions he got are much what I would expect. Still, maybe his book confirms that. Maybe it gives the lie to all this "its the way I was made" nonsense. After all, if no-one in the Gay community spotted he was straight it kind of proves its only an attitude of mind.

I also think it's a pretty cruel experiment, as any would be that involved lying to and causing pain worry and discomfort to your family and friends.

“After all, if no-one in the Gay community spotted he was straight it kind of proves its only an attitude of mind.”

Maybe that’s why he’s had to raise money for this book because he’s exposed the lie “I was born like this” So no publisher will touch it. Just thinkin’

“You can not be held in sin for the desire to do something. That is in fact the definition of temptation. It is the action on that temptation that creates sin.”

So I can covet my neighbors wife and ignore that commandment now? As long as I don’t actually act out on it, I can desire her as much as I want?

No, the act of “coveting” is to agree to seriously entertain the temptation.

If you see a pretty girl you may momentarily have a lustful thought. Sure, with prayer and discipline we can learn to avoid such thoughts.

But they happen. It is our nature. Men look at women with lust. Those tempted to envy, look at what others have and want it. Those tempted to overeat, desire food when they see it. Those tempted to alcohol have cravings.

In the same way, those who may have homosexual tendencies may be tempted.

It is when we entertain the thoughts of the things that tempt us, when we linger on the temptation that we sin.

Excellent suggestion massmike. Wonder how that book by the lost boy would sell?somehow he reminds me of that story in Genesis where Eve is wholly seduced by the serpent in the garden. Like this boy she had heard the truth but went looking
for that forbidden fruit, did not stick to what she had been
told —and encouraged her mate to join in her sin.(very rough summation of Genesis 3:)I did not disown my only son when he heeded the advice of his high school advisers -but I certainly cannot compromise Gods Truth about the reprobate to be reconciled with my son in his sin. It’s in God’s Hands. My son will either repent and be reconciled or die in his sins. The evil one has already so confused my son he went “chasing the bug” as they say and got HIV/AIDS on purpose to “prove”his “love” for current unfaithful partner.

How can you twist that into an admonition against homosexuality?

“While you may wish to proffer an argument against me, the Word of God is unassailable.”

I think what you meant was YOUR interpretation of the Bible should not be assailed.
